"Mello is the guy I want up in that situation," Expos manager Felipe Alou said.

"He's got nerves of steel when it comes to making a big play or stealing a big base or getting a big hit." The Mets remain in first place in the East Division, three games ahead of second-place Vero Beach and 4Vi games up on the third-place Expos.
