"We'll split Alaska in two and make Texas the third largest state." If you think their jokes are bad, you should hear the song that's being aired on Alaskan radio. Alaska plans to send the song, a copy of the petitions, some sample letters of protest and a press release describing the issue to every, newspaper, radio and TV station in Texas. To make sure White gets the message, Alaska is sending him a special package that also includes scenic' Alaskan postal cards, Alaskan moose I nuggets and a "Texas bear-trap," which can easily be mistaken for a mousetrap. Mark White has managed to involve the Lone Star State in a cold war of sorts with the people of Alaska, who are rather out of sorts with White for dubbing them as the Cold Barren State. White used those words in conveying his displeasure that the Alaska Divide is a "cold, barren place," he told an audience of judges and county commissioners at College Station. It isn't exactly the shot heard round the world, but when White shot off his mouth, they certainly heard it in Alaska. Cold as it may be up there. White's words have served to get Alaskans plenty steamed up.

Since then, Anchorage radio station KFQD has launched petitions to demand an apology from the governor of "that little state of Texas." The petition concludes: While everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, such subjective statements should be made only with personal experience. Therefore, generous Alaskans that we are. we might consider inviting him up as long as he promises to go back where he came from." And what if White refuses to apologize? Alaska evidently is not at all reluctant to pick on someone smaller than it is. Indeed.
