For 7-year-old Dane Hidden of West Palm Beach, the message written in hand-glued, multicolored glitter on his T-shirt explained why he was there: On the front: "We beat the word in my body." On the back: "Thank you." The blond-haired, freckle-faced boy knows precisely what leukemia is. He had it for three years, and lived to tell about it. Just last week, the doctor called to say that the sometimes painful treatment Dane had been receiving was no longer necessary. After all the agony and worry, the boy had been cured, said his father, Kevin Hidden. "It was worse at the end," Hidden said.

"There's a lot of pressure, because it's coming down to the wire whether he's going to live or die." Pane blew soap bubbles from the back of the Palm Springs Jaycees' float as he explained how he got well. "They gave me medicine, they gave me shots," Dane said, his blue eyes somehow wiser than most his age. "They gave me operations, too." His father is more specific: chemotherapy, spinal taps; bone marrow transplants. "He was so brave through the whole thing," Hidden said. "He even got to where the spinal taps didn't bother him too much." Just a few days after they heard the good news, Hidden heard on radio station WKGR that it was sponsoring the parade to raise money for the Leukemia Society of America.

"It's real strange that they had this now," Hidden said. After a slight rain delay, about 300 participants marched or rather, boogied to the tune of the popular 1960s hit, Louie Louie, played by a live band atop a long flatbed truck. From the parking lot of Palm Beach Community College to John Prince Park, the marchers played their kazoos and shed inhibitions in favor of psychedelic ties, wild hats and in the case of the Boca Raton Jaycees pink round-rimmed sunglasses. At a picnic afterwards, Tina Compton and her 4-year-old daughter, Sarita, sipped pink lemonade in their Jilly and baby Jilly clown costumes. Compton, of West Palm Beach, was there just for fun Sunday, but she is trying to make a business of clowning around, she said.

"It's my non-stress job," she said. A few steps away, the Castiglione family of Loxa-hatchee mother Debbie, father Gary, three children and Elvis and Daisy, the hound dogs rested from their walk through the steamy afternoon. The parents remember well when Louie Louie was first recorded and released and controversy surrounded the slurred lyrics that some were convinced were obscene. Years laterK the parade became a good excuse to reminisce. "It's just some time to get out and get silly," Gary Castiglione said.
