It's the only way to find out if they can handle the This frank admission comes from Lee, casting director on CBS-TV's "The Witness." Unlike other programs which hew to a script, ''The Witness" is an hour long, ad-libbed production which accounts for Miss Lee's unorthodox casting method. "I contact five or six actors whom I think would suit the role and each gets a copy of a dossier on the life of the man 'they will portray. They have several days to absorb the material before coming back for the audition. Actually, it's a griU''ng sessioflf I take the dossiers away from them and one by one they get the third degree." Facing the production staff in a simulated witness chair, the actor gets a rapid barrage of questions fired at him concerning the life of the famous figure he is playing. As one actor put it, "At that point, you fee! like you're under a microscope." "We want the actor to become the person he's playing," explains Lee.

"He has to have the mental resiliency to answer and react as the real man would have. Momory is important because, in absorbing the dossier he has to remember intimate details about the man in order to make his characterization believable. Acting talent and the ability to think on his feet are prime requisites." She does not seek look-alikes, pointing out that-if the actor has the imagination to assume another man's personality completely, he'll bring such realism to the role that he will become, in the viewers' eyes, the public figure as they have always Imagined him. "As I say," concludes Faye, "It's putting the actor on the spot but it's certainly been a productive method because we've found a Lucky Luciano, an Arnold Roth- stejn, a Huey Long and a Mayor James Walker. Right now I'm going to look over a few 'Bugsy' Siegels.".
