Johnson signed a minor-league contract Feb. 10 and hit just .129 in 31 at-bats this spring with one home run and two runs-batted-in. "I'm retiring as a Met," said Johnson, who coached last season in the expansion Tampa Bay Devil Rays' minor-league system last season. "I'm going to remain with the organization.

I don't know in what position. I wanted to finish up and keep the ties I had here." After three seasons with Detroit, Johnson played nine years with the Mets. He won World Series titles in both leagues, in 1984 with Detroit and in 1986 with New York. Johnson played for Colorado in 1994 and the Chicago Cubs in 1995 before retiring the first time.
