TWO THE CORSICANA (TEXAS) DAILY SUN. MONDAY, APRIL 28,. 1958 West Germans Get Grim Reminders On Anniversaries Of Hitler Regime By BOB CONSDOINE BERLIN, April 28 It is strange to hear, and see a nation take the whips to itself in penance. West Germany continues to do so. The flagellation takes many forms ranging from colossal reparations, the 20-year task of cleaning up the bombed cities, to the heavy taxes.

Chancellor Adenauer's gifts to the churches of Britain and other countries bombed by the Luftwaffe, and mea culpas that spill from men's lips. Defense Minister Franz Josef Strauss was talking to Bill Hearst, Frank Conniff and the writer the other day about the close cultural relations among European countries through the centuries. He said: "We are together in our art, we Germans share a common appreciation of literature, almost parallel justice and ao forth, but that didn't prevent us from committing the most, horrible things and terrible "crimes." Show Polish Slaughter A recent television show on West German scenes was a documentary showing German troops in World War attacking helpless Polish Jews, pulling them out of their homes and machine gunning them. The narrator made it very plain that this was the real McCoy, that this was not the savagery of the enemy but deeds inflicted by the This is the type of show that has become a standard feature commemorating the more sordid anniversaries of the Hitler regime. A German-Jewish couple who emigrated to Israel six years ago returned to Duesseldorf in 1953 and opened a tiny apparel shop.

They named it "Israel House." To- Telephone TR 4-8621 day It is a six-story department store. One-time believers in Hitler patronize it resolutely. "The diary of Anne Frank" has been shown throughout Germany on stage and screen and the effect generally has been one of shocked emotion and tears. While Hollywood turns out sugar coated versions of "The Young Lions" and tends to glorify Hitler's submariners in "The Enemy Below," the German film industry has produced a dozen pictures which are striking Indictments of Nazism and much closer to the bone than anything the allied authorities have been able to get across. The films have been a financial success, Viewpoints Differ One picture in point is "Null Acht Funfzehn," a bitter commentary on treatment of young recruits in Hitler's growing army.

Audiences sit in shock and silence at scenes of the bestial treatment their fathers, in some cases, underwent. "The Bridge On The River Kwai" has packed theaters in Germany for seven weeks but for reasons which are beyond those which attract audiences in the United States. Here, the great message the audience gets is a lesson in the stupidity of war. Though the great Krupp company now makes 2,000 things as varied and unwarlike as bridges and dental plates, its sole owner, Alfried Krupp, must in effect apply every so often to the Adenauer government to continue business because rightly or unjustly he was tried and convicted at Nuremberg for crimes largely committed by his late father. Krupp did an $800 million business in five continents last year and his company would be the core of Germany's contribution to the allied effort.

But he goes hat in hand and humbled, part of the parade of penance which no one could have envisioned during the strutting goosestepping days and whose termination no one can with clarity foresee.
