Just like a basketball dream team, these musicians come from all over the country Cleveland, Chicago, San Francisco, Santa Fe and more. The program is called "Fireworks for Brass" and tickets are Our picfis for the bast weekend fun $9 L75 for students, with a $3 student rush price with I.D. day of show.

You can get some legitimate laughs from politics at the show warms Big news from DM Big Band The Des Moines Big Band starts its seventh season Monday night from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at ye olde Spaghetti Works. As is customary, it's $3 to get in unless they've got a big deal guest artist such as Richie Cole, who will sit in Oct, 24. The band also has commissioned pieces from writers all over the country this year, and they'll record the stuff in February. This is not old-time swing big band music, this is just really great, brassy jazz one of the surest entertainment bets in the city on any evening and just about the only thing regularly happening on Mondays.

Bites at Barry's If you're seeking nourishment near the airport, Barry's (formerly Barry's Lounge) at 2107 McKinley, is now serving lunches. Barry's opens at 11:30 daily and usually has a couple of specials. If you're there to watch a football game on Saturday afternoon, you can chow down on half-pound burgers from the grill. Barry's has seven TVs and can tune in all the pro football games on Sundays, too. If you haven't seen it, check out the L-shaped pool table at Barry's while you're there.

Funny biz Listen up you pigs, Judy Tenuta is coming to the Funny Bone in Des Moines on Oct. 18. Tickets are $15, on sale now, and there are two shows, 8 and 9:45 p.m. Also available for laughs, on Monday, Michael Winslow, the guy who did all those sound effects on the "Police Academy" movies is at the Bone. Two shows again and tickets are $10.

Then Oct 4-9 Mark McCoUum one of the favorites at the Funny Bone will be on stage seeking laughs. For info, call 270-2100. Chili chomp Do your friends say you're full of beans when it comes to maldng chili? Prove you're hot stuff on Oct. 15 at the 7th annual Chili Cook-off at Billy Joe's Lounge. It's a fund-raiser for the Variety Club of Iowa.

You'll have to pay $25 to enter, but the top prize is $200. If you're not a chili chef but rather a chili chomper, you can sample the stuff for a $2 donation to the Variety Club. Taste them all and vote for your favorite. For entry forms or more info, call 223-9944. Who's open? So, when you're off to the theater or a concert and it starts at 7:30 p.m., there's often not enough time to dine before the curtain rises.
