Dks Moixks Sunday Rkgistkk 0(toukk3Q. 1994 7P College Football State Penn Huskers take a big step toNo.l 4 rips Buckeyes it' ST A v-- V''' HUSKERS 1 1 5 i Associate Pkkss State College, Pa. Penn State did all it could to hold onto its No. 1 ranking Saturday, trouncing No. 21 Ohio State, 63-14.

But Penn State Coach Joe Paterno would not be dragged into a debate. "I don't see (Nebraska Coach) Tom Osborne arguing that his kids are No. 1 and I don't see any reason I should," Paterno said. Penn State led, 35-0, at halftime. Ki-Jana Carter, who grew up 10 minutes from the Ohio State campus, ran for four touchdowns and left in the third quarter with the score 49-7.

Carter finished with 137 yards on 19 carries. Kerry Collins, the nation's top-rated passer, engineered five long drives and completed 19 of 23 attempts for 265 yards and two touchdowns. It was the Buckeyes' worst loss in 48 years. A touchdown in the final 3 minutes helped the Buckeyes avoid their worst loss since an 86-0 beating by Michigan in 1902. The running of Brent Moss and the passing of Darrell Bevell lifted the Badgers to an upset of No. 1 0 Michigan. During the week, Wisconsin Coach Barry Alvarez questioned the Badgers' enthusiasm. He suggested cliques had formed to alienate the offense and defense. 1 But those things were forgotten in the euphoria of victory.

"It's a huge game, bigger than the; Rose Bowl," said Bevell, who completed 18 of 26 passes for 161 yards; and three touchdowns. Moss, who missed games against Purdue (tie) and Minnesota (defeat), rushed for 106 yards on 26 carries, including a 3-yard touchdown. "I definitely gave the team a Moss said. "They were excited I was' coming back. I was excited I was coming back." 1 A I 1 Z.

Osborne and many of his players sidestepped all the talk of being No. 1. But Berringer said the Cornhuskers proved they should be No. 1.

Wiegert didn't mince words, either. "I hope the voters watched this game," Wiegert said. "We played a team that had played a tough schedule and we beat them convincingly." Toomer 2 27, Richards 112 Kansas 24, Oklahoma State 14 Lawrence, Kan. (AP) L.T. Levine broke a 61 -yard touchdown run on Kansas' second play as the Jayhawks defeated Oklahoma State for the fifth straight time. With the victory, Kansas still harbors flickering hopes for a bowl bid. The Cowboys, after winning three of their first four games in Coach Pat Jones' 11th season, have lost three of their last four.

Levine, becoming the 31st Jay-hawk to reach 1,000 career rushing yards, finished with 161 yards. On third-and-one on the second play, he darted through a hole over left tackle and ran 61 yards. It was the longest run in the junior tailback's career. Oklahoma State's Lawson Vaughn missed a 48-yard field-goal attempt in the first period and a 48-yarder in the second as Kansas went to intermission with a 10-0 lead. Jeff McCord tied his career long kick by hitting a 48-yarder.

Stewart completed just 12 of 28 passes. "It was like holes would open, and then they would close all of a sudden," said Stewart, who turned in his third consecutive subpar effort against Nebraska. Osborne praised the defense, and also circled the kicking game. Three of Darin Erstad's punts were downed inside the Colorado 10, giving the Cornhuskers the upper hand in field position all afternoon.

"Colorado had the long field most of the time," Osborne said. "They had a lot of possessions inside their 15- or 20-yard line. Starting out with a long field against a good defense, and nobody making any major mistakes, then it's tough to move the ball." Nebraska, third nationally in offense at 500.7 yards a game, managed 345. 1-back Lawrence Phillips, another Heisman Trophy candidate, had more than 100 yards rushing at one point in the game but finished with 86. Quarterback Brook Berringer, forced into action when Tommie Fra-zier was sidelined with blood clots in his leg, made the most of his fourth career start "I was confident; the whole team was," said Berringer, who completed 12 of 17 passes for 142 yards.

Nine of those passes were caught by tight ends Eric Alford and Mark Gilman. Alford's five catches matched his career total entering the game. "They were really trying to jump on the run, and that allowed us to get behind them," Gilman said. Berringer, a junior who has battled problems with a collapsed lung, was composed under pressure. "People think that without Tommie Frazier, we can't win," Wie-gert said.

"But Brook played a great game." Because Berringer was banged up, Osborne went with a plain vanilla offense for several games to try and avoid further injury to his quarterback. But that changed Saturday. This was as wide open as Nebraska gets on offense. "What you saw is what we've got," Osborne said. One of Alford's receptions was a 30-yarder for a touchdown that gave Nebraska a 24-0 lead with 10 minutes 42 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The Cornhuskers took a 17-0 half-time lead. Fullback Cory Schlesinger opened the scoring on a 14-yard run in the first quarter. Tom Sieler's 24-yard field goal in the second quarter made it 10-0, then Clinton Childs scored on a 2-yard run in the final minute of the half. Tony Banks and Nigea Carter hooked up for a school-record 93-yard touch- 11 down pass play and Marc Renaud scored twice while gaining 181 yards as Michigan State snapped a three-' sas State, but Oklahoma turned the ball over five times and was outplayed in all phases as it fell to its worst eight-game record in 30 seasons. The Wildcats scored more points than they had in 39 previous trips to Norman. "We played a very emotional game against OU last year and we played with emotion and a lot of pride today," Coach Bill Snyder said. The Sooners tried a no-huddle offense. But the ground game was ineffective most of the day, and as a result Garrick McGee wound up trying a season-high 45 passes.

Along with the turnovers, the Sooners had a punt blocked, another punt deflected, fumbled a punt return and had a botched point-after try result in two points for the Wildcats.
