6C THE PALM BEACH POST FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 1987 BKC racing secretary Woods resigns after 20 years Pari-Mutuels L.V. McClendon, who dropped his booking five weeks into the season. "Wells spread himself too thin," Laughlin said. "He raced Orlando and here. He did terrible here.

He'll just race at Orlando this year. I think it's better for him, too." Joining the PBKC roster is the Ward and Scherck Kennel. Jack Scherck provided Delray Beach resident James Paul with greyhound great P's Rambling, the world-record holder for the three-eighths mile course. Rambling recently was retired to stud in Abilene, Kan. Paul's other greyhounds, who raced for Dick Andrews and John Allen last year, will be in the Ward and Scherck Kennel this year.

Greyhounds are beginning to arrive at Taunton Dog Track for this year's Greyhound Race of Champions and will be schooled this weekend. The competition begins Aug. 26 with succeeding rounds Aug. 29 and Sept. 2.

The finals will be Sept. 5. Cary Alsobrook's Belafonte, one of PBKC's representatives, has a record of 21-9-3-3-1 at Seminole Greyhound Track this season. Teammate Rancho Chip, racing for A.G. Neville, has a 23-4-2-7 record at Southland.

DD's Nelson won the $50,000 Stroh's International Aug. 8 at Mile High Kennel Club in Commerce City, Okla. Frontier Outlaw was second. Tri Flak Caducean broke Wylde Show Biz's five-sixteenths-mile course record at Seminole Greyhound Park with a clocking of 30.32, three-hundreths of a second faster than Show Biz's best set Aug. 24, 1985 Chester Culbreath, a veteran of more than 50 years of greyhound racing in South Florida, had his ashes spread over the stretch at Biscayne Dog Track.

Culbreath, 77, died July 14. 1987 PBKC rotter: Southern; John Allen; Dick Andrews; Big Red; Charter; Deryl Clark; Debonair; James Douglas; Roy Grober; Haber; J.B Harris; Kerry Patch Kennel; Ralph Long; Midnight Blue; A.G. By PAT LANGFORD Palm' Beach Post Staff Writer Palm Beach Kennel Club will have a new racing secretary when it opens its 57tb season Oct 8.

Longtime PBKC employee Dave Wood, who held the position the last two years, resigned last week to devote his attention to racing department at Daytona Beach Kennel Club, where he has worked the last few summers. PBKC General Manager Art Laughlin has. been looking over applications and hopes to hire a new racing secretary within the next few days. The timing of the resignation did not allow Laughlin to advertise in Greyhound Update, the monthly trade magazine. But he was able to get the word out in the American Greyhound Track Operators Association newsletter.

Laughlin has received "about eight" appli-; cations, all from employees at other grey- hound tracks. Laughlin said he was disappointed to lose Wood, who worked for PBKC for more than 20 years, most of them as presiding judge. Wood moved from presiding judge to racing secretary two years ago following the departure of John Hartwell. "He's a good racing secretary," Laughlin said. "It was probably a business decision for him, and he decided to stay." In an effort to keep fans comfortable throughout its extended season, which will run through Aug.

1, 1988, PBKC officials are having air-condition installed on the second floor of the facility. The system is being installed this summer and will be ready opening night. PBKC will hold official schooling racing Sept. 28-Oct. 3.

Almost all of the kennels that raced at the local track a year ago will return. The only ones missing will be Ryan and Miller and George Wells. The Ryan and Miller Kennel is the first victim of the expanded racing season. Ryan and Miller has a booking at Southland Greyhound Park in West Memphis, where racing is held April through November. By the time co-owner Lloyd Miller is able to get his dogs to PBKC, the season will be more than a month old.

And when Southland begins its '88 season, PBKC still will have four months of racing to go. "Because of the expanded dates in the industry, some kennels have had to make decisions on where to race," Laughlin said. Local fans may have recognized Ryan and Miller greyhounds by the Arizona prefix in their names. Also representing the kennel last year were A Riddle, Unruly Benson and Bountiful Black. The Wells Kennel was dropped from the roster for poor performance.
