DKS Mi INKS StATHY RKfilSTKH At'iM'ST I i. 5E Weddings After 150 miles, he didn't feel all that bad 4 1 A It was, by definition, a wimp's 150-mlle bicycle ride; that Is, I was able to finish it. I refer, of course, to the optional Matthew Meiners Steele Kline-Melneri Icon Anderson Sara Puotinen It was an interesting experience. Not one I want to repeat, but Interesting. Curt Christine Brown Brown Brown Embry Christine Embry and Curt Brown, both of Des Moines, were married May 18, The bride is the daughter of Thomas md Susan Embry of 1620 Leland Ave.

Meiners Kline Stacle Nicole Kline of Dei Moinet and Matthew Wade Meiners of Geneva, were married May 29, The bride It the daughter of William and Debbie Kline of 3625 S.W, Third St.

The groom it the ion of Bob and Nancy Meiners of Geneva, III. The bride works for Buttrey-Wulff-Mam-minga Agency Inc. In Batavia, III. The groom works for Tenneco PCA in Wheeling, III, The couple will live in Batavia. Anderson Puotinen Sara Lynne Puotinen of Des Moines and Scott Thomas Anderson of Austin, were married July 6.

The bride is the daughter of Art and Judy Puotinen of 528 Valley West West Des Moines. The groom is the son of Darrin and Carol Anderson of Austin. Both the bride and groom are recent graduates of Gustavut Aldophus College in St. Peter, Minn, The couple will live in Claremont, Calif. loop that turned Wednesday of the recent Register' Annual Bicycle Ride Across Iowa-XXIV Into a 150-mile day.

By calling it a wimp's ride I don't mean to imply that It was easy for me. It wasn't, I assume it was If John Karras might have wondered if, after suggesting in a Sunday column that I might try it, I actually did complete the 150-mile loop, Yes, I did. And I had a lot of company. State Trooper Jay Ohlcnsehlen of Mt, Pleasant counted riders crossing the road where he was stationed on the 150 loop (he told me as I crossed that I was 150, which struck me as fitting). Of those, 1,087 signed in at an official check point.

There were 904 men and 183 women from 42 states and six other countries. About 1,625 did the optional 100-mile loop. Iowa had more loopers than any other state. Figures. AH this information came from Dave Young, the Lake Mills Ride Right chairman.

Yes, I did it, and actuully felt a lot less trashed at the end of It than I have at the end of a lot of much shorter rides. I didn't feel good, understand (I was not ready to skip and cavort with fair maidens), but I didn't feel unspeakably sore, either. There are several reasons, and a big one is the reuson for my calling It a wimp's 150 we had favorable winds for about 115 of the 150 miles (actually, by the time I rode up a hill to a pi rji hi fori wi church dinner and back, then out to our motel, I totaled 155 miles), and head winds for only about 35. Another big reason: The day stayed cool Uie thermometer in my watch never got out of the 70s, even in direct sunlight. The third reason, and perhaps the least important, waa that I had a plan of attack, First, I maintained a reasonable pace with the help of a heart monitor.

Second, to avoid long stopi off the bike, I carried my own food Fig Newtons for energy, dried apricots for potassium, an energy drink for electrolytes and ibuprofen to deaden the pain. I had two one-quart bottles on the bike, and enough of the energy drink in powder form to mix another six quarts. 1 drunk five quarts of the stuff (and may never touch another drop) in the ll-plus hours on the road, and my longest stop In the first 80 miles was 13 minutes. It was an Interesting experience. Not one 1 want to repeat soon, but interesting.

I also am sustained by the thought that I probably won't be around for Iowa's bicentennial. A double century in one day? It's been done, but not by me. JSk 'TU i ill" easy for the legiona who blasted by me, but not for me. At that, I'm certain I was the only 150-mile cyclist that day to stop In St. Ansgar on the way to Charles City to write a short piece for the next day's Register.

You didn't see it unless you got the short-run special RAGBRAl section because the story didn't make the regular Register. That's why I'm writing this now; not out of a need to brag about what actually is a somewhat dubious achievement (does one brag about but rather to let the half dojen or so who David Cassady Sheila Cassady Diane Knief Robert Knief Shannon Hubler Dsirdre Hublir Cassady Straight Sheila Marie Straight and David Michael Cassady, both of Des Moines, were married May 25.
