'Last Look' Giants, Indians Look Like Sixth In Their Loops By HOWARD SIGMAND INS Sports Writer SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS They have Willie Mays, a new home and many new faces, but the San Francisco Giants aren't likely to escape the National League's second division in 1958. Manager Bill Rlgney is trying to rebuild a sixth-place team that still has creaks in many spots. It will be an uphill battle and much depends on the "if" players and untested rookies.

A glance at the Giants' roster shows; Catching Valmy Thomas and Bob Schmidt lack major league experience. Thomas hit .241 as rookie. comeback by Ace Johnny Antonelli (12-18) is imperative and Giants are depending on Curt Barclay, Ruben Gomez, Ray Crone, Paul GieJ, Marv Grls- som, Ray Monzant, Stu Miller and Al Worthington. testing ground. Rookie Willie Kirkland and the incomparable Mr. Mays. Hank 3auer, Whitey Lockman and Bob 3peake also are 011 hand.

Consensus: Fifth place. CLEVELAND INDIANS Frank Lane has moved fast In trading market and the Cleveand Indians hope to combine some big punch with a big pitch for a first division berth in the American League. Change has been the keynote of lie new regime of Lane and Manager Bobby Bra.g-an and the Indians look stronger than the team that finished sixth in 1957. A rundown of the Tribe roster shows: too strong with al Naragon, Russ Nixon and J. W.

Phone TR 4-8241 Sime Is Easy Victor In Duel With Morrow BIG SPRING, Tex. The scene of the Dave. Sime Bobby Morrow sprint event that excited the nation was calm today. But track fans still talked about the big: redhead from Duke and how he toppled Morrow, the Olympic champion, in a windblown 100- yard dash. The clash ot these great sprinters "made" the American Business Club Relays, a track and field carnival that got scant attention before it brought Sime and Morrow together in their heralded "rubber match." A terrific crosswind dumped columns of dust all over the crowd of 6,500 but they roared approval of a great race.

Under the circumstances the 9.6 time of big Dave was sensational. Sime holds or shares all the world's sprint records. Sime looks toward three meets in consecutive weeks and Morrow grimly promises that he'll work like a Trojan to get into shape for the climactic struggle with the Duke flyer in the Penn Relays. Sime's first meet will be against Virginia at Durham next Saturday. Then there'll be a dual meet with Wake Forest the following week.

That will lead up to the Penn Relays. Morrow said he was going to work on his starts. The Abilene Christian College runner was last off the blocks in the dash against Sime Saturday. That and his failure to put on the finishing "kick" for which he had become famous lost him the race. Sime beat Morrow bv a foot and a half.

The latter didn't even finish second ho lost to his teammate, Bill Woodhouse, by six inches. Morrow has an outstanding record he swept the sprints In the Olympic Games, once ran a 91 wind-aided 100 and tied the worlds record at 9.3. Morrow said "It's going to be different" at the Penn Relays. JASPER HOSTS GOLFEHS JASPER, Tex. defending national champions, the NCAA's University of Houston and the NAIA's Lamar Tech, shared the favorite's role in the East Texas Intercollegiate Golf Tournament today.

Teams also were entered in the 36-hole, one-clay meet by Notre Dame, Western Illinois and Southern Methodist. Round Tablie raced 22 times in 1957, winning of them in a row. Corsicana is going to luivc its best chance in the tennis competition, and its poorest In the track and field, where Tiger teams have showed little interest, in past years. Corsieana singles players Bobby Armistead and Helen Lou Gutshall appear to have thi; best chance to annex honors, though Bill Ford imd Dale Triiitt may do well with their doubles play.

The Corsicana Dads Club will meet at 7:30 tonight at the high school to install new officers and wind up its official business for the 1957-58 school year. Marvin Sa.nders is going to take over the reins from Sam Gordon, who for the past two years has been president of the Club. Membership in the Dads Club is open to ali men, whether dads or not. But especially invited are those whose sons are football players or other Corsicana athletes, or who arc interested in the athletic program of the public schools. Those, the club figures, are the people most interested in doing the work that the Dads Club has set for itself.
