Proposals to name three other highways in the state are still pending, he said. Although he wasn't aware of the proposal made by the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Stevens said the plan could be approved if the group follows DOT guidelines.

Lein said his organization would pay for signs that would be placed on each end of the stretch of highway to be named, at no cost to the cities or the county. "It's just in memory of all the 12,000 purple hearters in the state of Iowa," he said. Altoona, Polk County and the DOT have yet to approve the plan. The first five-mile stretch of relocated U.S. Highway 65, which will run from Interstate Highway 80 to Rising Sun Drive, is scheduled to open in the fall.

If his proposal is approved, Lein said, he hopes it will be in time to make arrangements for a dedication ceremony during the group's national convention, to be held this summer In Des Moines. Heart. The group has 12,000 members in five Iowa chapters and nearly 100 members In its local chapter. All of the members have been awarded the Purple Heart, a military medal given to those wounded in action. Lein said the idea for naming relocated U.S.

Highway 65 came from two other states, Maryland and New Jersey. He said those states have designated portions of their highways in honor of the group. "When this highway proposal came up, since it did not have a name, I thought it'd be nice to have a name associated with that," he said. "We don't have a monument like other veterans groups, and we're the only veterans organization where the recipients almost paid the supreme sacrifice. Not that it makes us any better, but it puts a restriction on who can join." Dwight Stevens, state traffic engineer for the Iowa Department of Transportation said the agency has approved the naming of at least one highway U.S Highway 34 in southern Iowa, which was named after the Red Bull or 34th Infantry Pleasant Hill has approved the plan; Polk County, Altoona and the DOT must agree.

By ESTELA VILLANUEVA ReoisterStafe Writer The local chapter of The Military Order of the Purple Heart wants to name the first stretch of relocated U.S. Highway 65 after its organization. In order for the Iowa Department of Transportation to name the five-mile stretch of highway after the group, the organization must first gain the approval of the governing bodies of Altoona, Pleasant Hill and Polk County, through which the highway passes. The group passed its first hurdle last week by gaining the approval of the Pleasant Hill City Council after a presentation by Lowell Lein, commander of the local chapter and sergeant in arms of the Department of Iowa Military Order of the Purple District Court records. These are stories, not lies, pointed out Maureen Korte of 7624 Hickory Lane in Urbandale.

"The story doesn't have to be factual," she said. "Storytellers don't lie, they just embellish." Korte, an experienced storyteller who also teaches classes in the ancient art, is one of the founding members of the fledging group that began meeting once a month at the Playhouse last September. So far, membership has been so informal that the group does not have a name, said a Playhouse official. Prior to the January meeting, the most people who had ever attended a meeting was 12.
