"It was tough going from $25,000 a year to $8,800," said Murphy. "My fiancee at the time sure couldn't understand it. But this isn't the best business to get into if money is what you're after." Murphy set a goal for himself when he started at La Crosse to make his next move after two years, and almost two years to the day, in July 1982, Chattanooga beckoned. Already the No.

1 station in its market when he arrived, WTVC's ratings nonetheless improved during Murphy's tenure. "By the time I was ready to leave Chattanooga," he said, "people were telling me I had the ability to be a reporter in most major markets. Several of them, like Madison, Atlanta and even my hometown of Milwaukee were interested in me for that. "I felt to become a more complete sportscaster, though, I needed some time as the day-to-day sports anchor. I'm still not comfortable with it yet, but I'm hoping in about two weeks I'll be laughing and having a good time with it." Right now, Murphy can be seen only on the 6 p.m.

newscast, though he hopes ultimately to move into the 11 p.m. slot as well. In October, Buck Kinnaird ended a 22-year reign as the station's sports voice. Two months later, his replacement. Rick Powers, stunned his superiors by announcing he was leaving to take a similar job in his hometown of St. Louis.

Tchis credit, Dick Sanford has done a more than credible job in the ensuing months, but WPTV general manager Bill Brooks never considered Sanford the final solution to the problem. That solution finally arrived last Thursday in the way of new sports anchor Pat Murphy. Typical of talent coming into this market, which ranks about No. 60 nationally, Murphy is young (28), relatively inexperienced and will be doing most of his learning on the job. It could be an up-and-down apprenticeship, but Murphy has shown signs of making things interesting.

"We were primarily looking for somebody with a good energy level, and primarily who knows sports," Brooks said. Asked to draw a comparison between Powers and Murphy, who are about the same age, Brooks said, "Rick did a fine job, but Pat has a higher energy level and I think he has a little more flair." Brooks said that energy level manifested itself best in features Murphy did for his last station, ABC affiliate WTVC in Chattanooga, where he was the weekend anchor. "I'm not the kind of guy to sit in the office and get my stories off the wires," Murphy said. "That stuff drives me crazy. I want to get out and see what's going on; I love doing the offbeat stories." In his two years in Chattanooga, Murphy's features ran the gamut, from a blind golfer to a deaf Softball coach, from women's bodybuilding to the clown prince of golf.

"Those are the bread and butter of this business," said Murphy. "I really think if you can do those stories, you can do anything." Although the West Palm Beach market is larger than Chattanooga (which ranks 79th), this area is relatively lacking in organized sports and has no major college program.
