Although statistics show that crime has increased in the area, neighborhood activists contend that they have dramatically reduced crime by driving drug dealing and related activities out of the area. Pizza Hut officials also suggested changing employee uniforms to a neutral color and equipping employees with cellular telephones to report crimes and for emergencies, Doughty said. "The only issue for us is the crime. It has nothing to do with discrimination.

We're concerned that there are people trying to confuse the issue," he said. Doughty said Pizza Hut is sensitive to the issue because six of its delivery drivers have been killed on the job across the nation in the last 2lA years. The issue has been brought to the forefront by leaders of the Drake neighborhood, part of which is included in the ban area. Diane Munns, president of the Drake Neighborhood Association, said at least one of Pizza Hut's options, daytime delivery, is not acceptable because most residents don't order pizza then. Other Options "The bottom line is delivery in our area and I don't know if the neighborhoods will be able to accept any- SHOOTING Continued firm Page 1M Americans who live in or visit the house at 1902 E.

"My step-son had an altercation with one of the Asians right before the first drive-by. He hit one of their cars and offered to pay for the damage but they didn't want his money. Instead, they came back that night and shot up a van out front.

"The next weekend, they came back and shot up the house. It sounded like firecrackers out front and I joked to a friend, 'We better hit the And then I realized they really were shooting into the house and I screamed, 'We really better hit the I never heard an automatic weapon fire before." A large bullet hole in a living room wall now is covered with a Chinese wall hanging. Lilly, 41, said she's confronted residents of 1902 E. Walnut. "All they want to know is if I don't like Laotians," she said.

"They want to solve everything with guns. I told them I don't want to fight the Southeast Asian war all over again in our neighborhood. But that's about what's been happening. This is like a war. "They chased one kid down an alley shooting at him and missed his head by inches.

The kids around, here won't walk by that house anymore. They go way out of their way to avoid it." No Solution Lilly said the police have not been able to solve any of the frequent drive-by shootings in the neighborhood. "The neighbors are threatening to take matters into their own hands if the police don't do something soon," she said. Shinn, telling the other side of the story, said the neighbors have been taking the law into their own hands all summer. And she said it apparently stems from their racist beliefs and their affiliation with the Lost Boys gang.

"We are all hard-working adults in this house," said Shinn. "We just want to be left alone and we're having a hard time doing that." She said the problems started last summer when a nice-looking white girl drove by. "She finally stopped and talked to my Asian brother-in-law," Shinn said. "Her dad saw her and got upset. I guess he recruited the Lost Boys to teach us a lesson.

They came back with Molotov cocktails. They surrounded the house, kicked open thing short of that. If we did get delivery in the neighborhood, then we would look at other ways to make their drivers as safe as they can be," Munns said. Munns and other neighborhood leaders presented their own options at the meeting, including: A trial delivery service until 10 p.m., to be evaluated after six months. Having customers leave porch lights on and allowing Pizza Hut employees to drive without restaurant signs on their vehicles.

Pizza Hut officials said this is already their policy across the nation. OFFICIAL PUBLICATION protest pursuant to IOWA CODE 325.13 AND 327A 3. Those proposals were among the suggestions made during a closed-door meeting to discuss the restaurant's delivery service ban in the area. No agreements were made, but both groups said they will review the options and may meet again in a few weeks. The Pizza Hut at 31 10 Forest Ave. has not delivered in the area between the Des Moines River and 25th Street and the MacVicar Freeway and Hickman Road because of Safety concerns for its drivers. Last week, Pizza Hut offered two compromises: daytime delivery and pick-up at "safe harbors" where customers would meet the drivers at a specified time.

The second idea has worked in other cities but requires organization from neighborhood groups to help provide security, said Rob Doughty, vice president of public relations for Pizza Hut. Love Triangle Police said earlier that the shooting on the other side of town, on Lindlavista Way, last weekend apparently stemmed from a love triangle unrelated to the incidents on the east side. A boy with possible ties to a white and Asian-American gang apparently was jealous of a Hoover High School boy who was seeing his ex-girlfriend. The current boyfriend was at the Lindlavista residence Saturday with several friends when it was torn up by gunfire. No injuries were reported.

The girl in question was absent when the 40-plus shots were fired into the house. The police investigation of the Lindlavista shooting took detectives to 1902 E. Walnut with a search warrant Tuesday, but the powerful rifle they were looking for was not found. The other confiscated items are not likely to lead to charges, police said Wednesday. Shinn said police officers told her that suspects in the Lindlavista shooting are her friends.

But those mentioned "were at our house the night it happened. They couldn't have been involved; they didn't even have a vehicle. They were here all night."
