Burns, 68, of the 3200 block of Southeast 22nd Street died of cancer Sunday at home. The body was cremated, and memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at Assured Care Funeral Home in Ankeny. Mr.

Burns had lived in Des Moines most of his life. He was a retired professor emeritus of English at Drake University and an Army veteran. He was a writer and had formed his own publishing company. He was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1972. He enjoyed birdwatching.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne; a son, T.J., and two daughters, Sheila Oglesbee and Becky Crone, all of Des Moines; a sister, Beverly Burns of Ohio; three brothers, Norman of Brooklyn, Robert of Mason City and Gerald of New Jersey; and seven grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central lowa. Neptune Cremation Society of lowa is handling arrangements. WILLIAM SAWHILL Indianola William Bernard Sawhill, 79, of Indianola died of a heart ailment Tuesday at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be at 2 p.m.

Saturday at First Baptist Church in Indianola, with burial at Peru City Ceme- tery in Peru. Mr. Sawhill was born in Des Moines and had lived here most of his life before moving to Indianola. He had been a policeman, a carpenter and had owned and operated lowa Lock and Key. He was an Army veteran of World War I and a member of American Legion and Masonnic Lodge.

He enjoyed dancing and fishing. He is survived by wife, Cornelia; two sons, Danny of Runnells and Doran of Sandpoint, Idaho; stepson, Dale Eeling of Vidalia, two stepdaughters, Betty Schutte and Delores Koopman, both of Pella; a sister, Margie Foddrill of Des Moines; four grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; a great 31 step-great-grandchildren; and a step-great-great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Peterson Funeral Home in Indianola. Memorial contributions may be made to Farmers Chapel Building Fund.

FRANCES JONES Waukee Frances Marian Jones, 74, of Waukee died of cancer Monday at lowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be at 5 p.m. Friday at Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial will be at Sturgis National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Mrs.

Jones was born in Sedalia, and had lived in South Dakota before moving to the Des Moines area in 1994. She was a homemaker. She is survived by a daughter, Lucy Hughes of Des Moines; a brother, Earl Swafford of Albany, a sister, Lucille Swafford of Sedalia, and a grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie. MYRTLE CHENTLAND Story City Myrtle L.

Chentland, 89, of Story City died of pneumonia Sunday at Bethany Manor there. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church near Radcliffe, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Zion Cemetery there. Mrs.

Chentland was born in Roland and had lived in Radcliffe and Story City most of her life. She was a homemaker, a member of Story City Senior Citizens and a volunteer with Bethany Manor. She is survived by two daughters, Elaine Olson of Eagle Grove and Pamela Hinderaker of Ames; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

LEONARD GRAY Bangor Leonard "Peanuts" Gray, 68, of Bangor died of a heart ailment Tuesday at Veterans Medical Center in Knoxville. The body was cremated, and memorial services will be at 1 p.m. today at Bangor Liberty Friends Church in Bangor, of which he was a member.

Burial will be at Bangor Liberty Friends Cemetery there. Mr. Gray was born in Rapid City, S.D., and had lived in Bangor since 1953. He was a retired motor repairman with Egleston Electric Co. and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Viola; three daughters, Pamela Wilson and Donna Crosse, both of Eldora, and Wanda Mills of Cayce, S.C.; a son, David of State Center; a brother, Robert of Hollister, three sisters, Norma Burroughs of Council Bluffs, Lue Hickman of Shenandoah and Betty Ratcliff of Cave City, seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The family will receive friends an hour to the time of services today at the prior church. Biersborn Funeral Home in Union is handling arrangements. JAMES FOUREZ Des James E. Fourez, 60, of the 4600 block of Hickman Road died of a heart ailment Tuesday at Mercy Medical Center.

The body was cremated, and memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at College Avenue Christian Church, of which he was a member. Additional memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Number Ten Church of Christ in Potomac, Ill. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date.

Mr. Fourez was born in Oakwood Township, and had lived there until moving to Des Moines in 1991. He was a professional farm manager and a computer support representative with Pioneer Hi-Bred International. He was a member of American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers and the University of Illinois Alumni Association. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; two sons, Robert of Polk City and Thomas of Des Moines; a daughter, Kathleen Lanman of Peachtree City, two brothers, William of Sidell, and Richard of Potomac; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends an hour prior to time of each memorial service. Memorial contributions may be made to his church, Number Ten Church of Christ in Potomac or the American Heart Association. Westover Funeral Home is handing arrangements. DICK ROLFFS Pella Dick Rolffs, 96, of Pella died of a heart ailment Tuesday at Pleasant Park Estate in Oskaloosa. Services will be 10:30 a.m.

Saturday at Sully Christian Reformed Church in Sully, with burial at Sully Cemetery. Mr. Rolffs was born in the Netherlands and had lived in the Sully and Lynnville areas before moving to Oskaloosa in 1958. He moved to Pella in 1971. He had been a farmer and was a bus driver for the Oskaloosa school system before retiring.

He was a member of Protestant Reformed Church in Pella and enjoyed fishing and woodworking. He is survived by his wife, Henrietta; three sons, Henry of Sully, John of Wilmar, and Marvin of Oskaloosa; four daughters, Janet Jansen of Pella, Cornelia Vos of Sully, Dorothy Vos of Oskaloosa and Mildred Lanser of Newton; two stepsons, Harlan Nieuwsma of Marion and Dennis Nieuwsma of Woodbridge, two stepdaughters, Connie Overbergen of Oskaloosa and Doreatha Plate of Le Mars; 27 grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; 69 greatgrandchildren; 28 step-greatand four great-greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Minnie. BETTY ANN BRAUCKMAN Dallas Center Betty Ann Brauckman, 68, of Dallas Center died of a kidney ailment Monday at lowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Assumption Catholic Church in Granger, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Beaver Catholic Cemetery there. Mrs.

Brauckman was born in Lake City and had lived in Dallas Center since 1954. She had been an Avon sales representative and was a member of American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed camping. She is survived by her husband, Earl; two sons, James of Dallas Center and William of Tempe, three daughters, Laura Cain of Bettendorf, Patricia Goedken of Cedar Rapids and Christina Perkins of Dallas Center; two sisters, Miriam Hight of Lake City and Marjorie Kittlesland of Mellette, S.D., three brothers, Arnold Moulds, Dennis Moulds and Melvin all of Lake City; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. may call after 4 p.m.

MARY DEUTSCH Newton Mary Hortense Wells Deutsch, 96, of Newton died of a heart ailment Sunday at Heritage Manor Care Center there. A rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m.

today, followed by services at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, of which she was a member. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Mrs. Deutsch had lived in Newton all her life.

She was a retired teacher with Newton schools and a member of Newton Women's Club, Newton Community Education Association, Jasper County Retired Teachers Association, lowa State Teachers Association, National Education Association and Newton PTA. She was organist at her church for many years. She is survived by three sons, Leonard of Winter Haven, John of Savannah, and Robert of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Catherine DeutschAnderson of Arlington, and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements. THOMAS DeFORD Des Moines Thomas Joseph DeFord, 88, of Valley View Village died of a heart ailment there Tuesday. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Hamilton's Funeral Home. Burial will be at Avon Cemetery.

Mr. DeFord was born in Des Moines and had lived here most of his life. He was retired firefighter with the city of Des Moines, an Army veteran of World War and a member of Bethany Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening. He is survived by a niece, Marilyn Nagle of Saylorville; and a nephew, Bob Cannon of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Hazel and Louise. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamilton's Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to his church. SUE CRITELLI Des Moines Sue Critelli, 62, of the 5700 block of Urbandale Avenue died of cancer Tuesday at Hospice Kavanagh House.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Westover Funeral Home, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Mrs. Critelli had lived in Des Moines all her life. She was a retired caregiver with Home Instead Care Center and a member of lowa Caregivers Association.

She enjoyed caring for the elderly. She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Peterman of Villa Park, two sisters, Joy Briggs of Palm Desert, and Maureen Gardiner of Delray Beach, a brother, Charles Fenton of Jacksonville, and two grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Kavanagh House. CALVIN RAYBURN Des Moines Des Moines Calvin Marlow Rayburn, 60, of the 400 block of 28th Street died of cancer Monday at Hospice Kavanagh House. The body was cremated, and memorial services will be at 2 p.m.

Tuesday at Hamilton's Funeral Home. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date in Manchester. Mr. Rayburn was born in Manchester and had lived in Des Moines 30 years. He was a forensic scientist with the lowa Division of Criminal Investigation and one of the DCI's experts on the effects alcohol has on humans.

He had trained numerous officers at the lowa Law Enforcement Academy and was known across lowa by many judges, lawyers, doctors and law officers because of his work with the DCI. He also was an accomplished photographer and his photographs had been exhibited at the lowa State Fair, Grand View College and elsewhere around lowa. He was a member of Fine Print Group and Des Moines Camera Club. He was an Army veteran. Survivors include his parents, Marlow and Alice Rayburn of Manchester; and a brother, Ken of Anaheim, Calif.

THELMA CARLSON Greenfield Thelma L. Carlson, 93, of Greenfield died of a heart ailment Sunday at Greenfield Manor there. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Greenfield United Methodist Church, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Greenfield Cemetery.

Mrs. Carlson had lived in Adair County all her life. She was a retired elementary school teacher and a member of Order of the Eastern Star and PEO. She is survived by a son, Carl of Battle Lake, and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John.
