Twin or full size, Didnt Do It, Says Dixie Slay Suspect JACKSON, Feb. 5 (UPI) Gun fancier Byron De La Beckwith swore Wednesday he was not the assassin who killed Negro leader Medgar Evers with a single shot in the dark.

If Ive ever killed anything but time, well, we couldnt eat it at home, said the jaunty fertilizer salesman. Beckwith took the stand in his own defense Wednesday. He is accused of shooting Evers to death in Jackson early on June 12, 1963. THE rifle which the state claims killed Evers, Beckwith pulled the bolt, clicked the trigger, leaned back in the wit-- ness stand and swung the butt to his shoulder. He aimed the gun at the ceiling above the jury and announced that he could not identify it as ope of his collection of rifles.

He said it resembled a gun which he owned, and which was stolen from him a few hours before Evers died. But he said he could not be sure the gun he held was the same weapon. The defense rested its case immediately after Beckwith finished testifying, and the judge indicated the case will go to the jurors Thursday after attorneys closing arguments. The 43-year-old traveling salesman faces a i 1 death penalty if he is found guilty. He told the court that he had collected guns as long as I can remember.

I trade guns like a rock hound collects rocks I LIKE A MAN that likes a gun, he said. He also told of how he got a cut over his right 1 eye from a rifle recoil while target shooting two days before all this Evers mess came up. But he said Im the worst hunter in the world He said his shooting was limited to targets. BECKWITH DENIED two of the prosecutions main charges that his car was seen near Evers home the night Evers was killed, and that a few days before the slaying he asked two cab drivers how to get to Evers house. Beckwith took the stand after policeman Rov Jones, 33, who 1 said he saw Beckwith in Greenwood, Miss a 90-minute automobile trip from here, at p.m.

on June 11, the night on1 which Evers was killed. i Evers was killed about 12:30 a.m. on June 12 about 45 minutes after Jones said he saw Beckwith. Lt. -Horace Creswell of the1 Greenwood Police Department testified hesaw Beckwith in Greenwood at about 1:05 about 35 minutes after Evers' 1 murder.
