Favorite Point Given and eight other colts will be doing something in the Belmont Stakes that they've never done before race IK2 miles. Although Point Given's trainer, Bob Baffert, has two wins in the Kentucky Derby and three in the Preakness Stakes, he's never had a horse conquer the sweeping turns and extra quarter mile of the Belmont Stakes.

"It's a very odd distance for these horses," Baffert said. "I'm sure, after they get around there, they look down the stretch and are like, Wow, are you serious? Point Given, who won the Preakness three weeks ago, was installed as the 8-5 favorite in the third leg of horse racing's Triple Crowa Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos is listed as a 5-2 second choice in the opening betting line. By RANDY PETERSON REGISTER STAFF WRITER So much for the thought that the Chicago Cubs might promote a hot-hitting player from the Iowa tubs for this weekends series against the Chicago White Sox. After considering the promotion of outfielder Roosevelt Brown to use as a left-handed designated hitter against his team's American League cross-town rivals, Cubs Manager Don Baylor has decided otherwise.

"It's just not going to happen," Baylor told the Chicago Tribune. "We won some games on our own, and our pitching has been our strong suit. Andy (MacPhail) and I discussed it, and the timing's not right right now." In fact, Chicago had won 15 times in 16 games entering Friday's action and led the National League Central Division by five games. That leaves Brown and his 338 batting average in Iowa's lineup tonight when the triple-A Cubs open their longest homestand of the season 12 games. Iowa climbed back above .500 with a 5-2 victory over Las Vegas late Thursday night.

Iowa played at Las Vegas again late Friday. Tonight, the Cubs play the first of four games against Portland, at 7:05. Mike Meyers, who has a 3-2 record and 2.93 earned-run average, is expected to pitch for Iowa. Notable: Iowa trainer Bob Grimes has been selected as the Pacific Coast League all-star team's trainer for the triple-A all-star game in Indianapolis. Tonight is "Shirt off My Back Night." Fans can bid on the jerseys worn by Cubs players.

The purchased jerseys will be autographed by the players after the game. Proceeds go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. "I learned my lesson, and that is not to try to show off and just get it in there," said Bush, who got a standing ovation.

President Bush was in attendance and shook hands with each member of both teams and the umpires before the game. He then walked off the field to a standing ovation from the predominantly red-clad Nebraska crowd. He left Rosenblatt Stadium in the top of the third missing much of the action. Stanford trailed, 8-7, in the seventh inning when VanMeetren drew a leadoff walk from Tulane reliever Barth Melius. Joey Char-ron (9-2) came on in relief, and Arik VanZandt put down a nice bunt between first base and the pitcher's mound that Charron picked up, and then dropped for an error.

Ryan Garko hit a go-ahead run-scoring single in the seventh inning as Stanford rallied to beat Tulane 13-11 in the longest rime-inning game in College World Series history on Friday. Garko singled to center field during the Cardinal's five-run seventh to give Stanford its first lead in a game Tulane (55-12) controlled early. The game lasted 4 hours 18 minutes surpassing the previous mark of 4:01 by Arizona State and Oklahoma State in 1984. It was also the highest-scoring opening game in College World Series history.

Sam Fuld had three runs-batted-in, and Jonny Ash and Jason VanMeetren two each for the Cardinal (49-16), who are in the College World Series for a school-record third straight year. Mike Wodnicki (7-1) allowed two runs and three hits in 1ft innings for the victory, the Cardinal's sixth in seven games. After J.D Willcox allowed a run in the ninth inning, Jeff Bruksch, normally a starter, came in with runners on second and third and no outs and got three outs for his first save of the season. Stanford, the runner-up in last year's College World Series, will play the winner of Friday night's game between Cal State-Fullerton and Nebraska on Sunday night. Tulane, the nation's winningest team, will take on the loser in an elimination game.
