He was an excellent chief. He was respected and really did his job quite well." Moved Into Pink House In December 1985 Webb left his wife, moved into the Pink House right across the street and began seeing another woman. The divorce was final on May 1, 1986 it was Webb's third divorce and it was about that time that stories began to circulate that the chief had begun drinking heavily, Canarsky said. Later that year, after Webb met Anton, Jatras said there didn't seem to be any special magnetism between the two. But when she mentioned that she was going to have to leave the farmhouse where she'd been living, Webb said, "If you need a place to live come down to Lyons." Anton took him up on the offer and moved into the downstairs apartment that was being vacated by the Hoyts.

She told her friends that she felt safe living in the same house as a police officer. Last to See Her Alive On Dec. 15, 1986, Tony Sears of Decatur, a friend of both Webb and Anton, went to the Pink House to see Webb. According to information attached to an application for a search warrant, Sears told investigators Webb, who appeared to be drunk, confronted him with a .38 Smith Wesson revolver. He said he was astonished at Webb's behavior.

On his way out, he stopped to speak with Anton, ho said she was expecting company. Sears left about 5:30 p.m. It was the last time anyone reported seeing Anton alive. Committed Suicide Sears, according to Edgecomb, was a Vietnam veteran who had some emotional problems. Krieger said he had been diagnosed as schizophrenic in the military.

Two years after Anton's death. Sears committed suicide. Krieger said that initially there was some suspicion that Sears had been involved in Anton's death, but that as ruled out. On Dec. 17.

Edgecomb told police, she reported to Webb that Anton had failed to keep an appointment. They went to the downstairs apartment, which Webb opened with his own key. Edgecomb said she headr-d for the ful, because she might be killed," Murphy said. Murphy and Brothers moved away, but kept in contact with Anton. She married Tom Anton, whom Murphy described as "very quiet, very sweet to her, very patient." But in 1 986 they were divorced.

About the same time Webb, who also had been divorced recently, began showing up in the Iowa Great Lakes area to socialize. According to the school yearbook, his only extracurricular activity was the chess club. By 1974, Webb had become a police officer in Oakland, where he married a local girl and started a family.

When Canarsky was elected sheriff of Burt County that year, he hired Webb as his deputy. But after about a year, Webb quit his job to enlist in the Rhodesian army as a mercenary. Although Webb was a gun buff and read Soldier of Fortune magazine, Canarsky said he believes Webb, making $650 a month as a deputy, took the job in Africa mostly as a way to make a lot of money. Canarsky said Webb told him he had knee problems during basic training and discovered he would not be able to take his army pay out of the country.

Nevertheless, his exotic trip, military bearing and penchant for occasionally wearing military-type fatigues left some people with the impression that he was some kind of "merciless killer," Canarsky said. That wasn't the case, though, the sheriff said. When he returned, Webb was hired as police chief at Lyons. Edgecomb said she thought he was violent and "a strange person." His wife, Karen, told Edgecomb that Webb had assembled a cache of food and guns and was "preparing for Armageddon." Right-Wing Ties Gerald Krieger. a veteran investigator for the Nebraska State Patrol, said Wobb had ties to the Committee of 10 Million, an organization associated ith the right-w ing Minutemen group founded by Robert LXPugh, who had Iowa ties.

Shirley Edgecomb, now of Kapid City, S.D., she looked like she'd been "rode hard and put up wet." She had not led an easy life.
