I was expecting Paul Simon and Bob Dylan to talk about their age, but they didn't talk about what they were going through. "I thought I'd end up selling insurance or running some little chicken farm somewhere.

It didn't happen. I'm still doing this crazy music thing. I have the audacity to write rock 'n' roll records still, and go out on the road." Joel and others acknowledge they're writing different kinds of records, however. His new "River of across more as a caricature of the blues than the genuine article. On album, that isn't entirely Jig)-' fault; Joplin's performances moVe( from execrable to passable when she finally gets competent backing Got Dem 01' Kozmic Blues Again ma!" But instead of fully rearizeef performances, what we get from hen are flashes of excitement scatteroft amid clouds of bluesy over-emotirrf not totally unlistenable, but ly the stuff of greatness.

The Doors Maybe rock and roll really' need a band that blended bad poetry with lounge-band organ noodling if nothing else, it proved that xdclf could survive even the tackiest of middlebrow pretensions and give Mom and Dad the willies. That may be reason enough fof'cif iver Stone to celebrate the Doors, but there's no reason the rest of us have to. Face it: Take away his ly cultivated sexual menace, and Jirn Morrison is just the Robert Goulej rj'f rock, a crooner whose sound isfdfj fatuous to work on any but the most indestructible melodies. Li And even though the Doors tan claim a couple of memorable melo Continued from Page IF music, and Dundr has developed a taste for country. Mostly, however, there's a certain stagnation in tastes and listening habits.

The favorite groups of their youth remain the favorite groups of their adult lives, and there's less room for new stuff. "The majority of people, once they seem to hit around 30 or so, slow down rather considerably on the music front," says Fred Jacobs of Jacobs Media, a radio consultant who created the classic rock format to cater to these static tastes. "Some people completely shut down and become nostalgia heads," Jacobs explains. "Others just prefer the music they grew up with. It's kind of like a Nolan Ryan effect there's a bunch of older rockers they grew up with, like (Eric) Clapton, Jagger, (Steve) Win wood, whose careers they're still very interested in rather than picking up on new bands." The musicians themselves face different challenges.

True, they experience many of the same pulls on their time as their fans particularly family. But they've adopted solutions: They take their families on tour; they tour less frequently and for shorter amounts of time; they adopt different work habits, closer to home. For example, Billy Joel, 44, repairs to a one-room building he keeps at a commercial shipping harbor in Mon-tauk, Long Island. Bruce Hornsby, 38, installed a studio at his home in Williamsburg, so he wouldn't be too far from his infant twin sons. For the artists, the greater challenge is to stay relevant finding ways to make music without chasing or pandering to commercial trends.

"I was always afraid of my 40s," against "Cats" for the Saturday matinee crowds that grates. It's the fact that "Tommy" allegedly The Who's greatest work could make the transition from rock masterpiece t6 schlock showcase so easily. But isn't the only part of The Who's repertoire that has turned cheesy with age. Sat through "A Quick One While He's Away" lately? How about "The Who Sell Let's face it apart from "Quad-rophenia," most of "Who's Next" and a smattering of singles Generation," "Substitute," "I Can See for most of The Who's back catalog sounds pretty corny at this distance. Some of that has to do with Keith Moon's drumming, which may have once seemed the ultimate in instrumental anarchy but now simply sounds sloppy; some may be the fault of Roger Daltrey, one of the most incredibly stilted singers in rock.

But mostly, it's the result of a songbook that depended more on ar titude than melodic invention. Because as we all know, the only thing thats worse than adolescent rebellion is commercialized adolescent rebellion; Jefferson Airplane Is there anything worse than artistically ambitious folk-rockers? Sure there is artistically ambitious folk-rockers on acid. Hence the pretentious and self-indulgent muddle that was the Jefferson Airplane. There's no denying that the Airplane had some first-rate instrumentalists aboard, particularly guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady. But what the band did with that talent was more than slightly suspect, pursuing the instrumental abandon of jazz without bothering to develop its rhythmic acuity or harmonic discipline.

Apart from "Somebody to Love" (which, by rights, belonged to Grace Slick's old band, the Great Society), there's little in the Airplane's song-book that bears hearing today. Nor has the group's sound, from Slick's stentorian declamation to drummer WW ROOMS FROM says. "I think when we started out with the Beatles, they were all kind of 'Thank you, 'From me to you, 'Good-bye, My interests have changed to things that concern us all, really." Adds the Kinks' Ray who's 49, "You look a little harder for an emotional center. It's time to be realistic about issues that concern people and try to confront rather than ignore them. It's OK to still sing, 'Girl, you really got me but I want the new things I write to have a little more substance." And for many of these rockers, the most exciting part of their endeavors is that there are no real guidelines 6r expectations for their continued endeavors.

"I always thought you'd have to finish in rock 'n' roll at about 24 or so," McCartney says. "It just keeps going. When you're 30 you think, 'I better finish at about and when you're 40 you think, 'I definitely better finish at And when you get to 50, 1 don't know you just stop thinking, I guess." Rock 'n' roll itself is young enough that there are few precedents to guide the way.1 Says the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards, who turns 50 in December, "Nobody has taken it this far down the line. We have got to go out there and find out if it can be done." I was always afraid of my I thought I'd end up selling insurance. 7 BillvJoel 00 I $35 EXPIRES 1ZWS3 I fmipnwl 1 dies, even their best singles are far from golden.

After all, wouldn "Light My Fire" sound a lot better without the organ solo? And why it it that the beat to, "Hello, I Love YpuV Dreams" is a song cycle dealing with the hopes and dreams of someone entering middle age. Bruce Springsteen is no longer "Born to Run" but rather makes records about love, loss and commitment. Former Beatle Paul McCartney may still sing about falling in love with 17-year-old girls during his concerts, but his. new music reflects more serious concerns about the environment and animal rights. "I'm a grown-up person now, the father of four kids," McCartney, 51, Pi Mi ALL jf Album would be more tolerable as camp Festival of Trees Giant Balloon Parade Old Fashioned Christmas Walk Holiday Shows Pomsettia Display Decorated Homes and Museums Holiday Lights Shopping Snowstar Ski Area President Riverrjoat Casino Casino Rock Island Star of Bethlehem Planetarium 1-800-747-7800 MEAT LOAF bears such a strong resemblance the Henry Mancini instrumental "Baby Elephant A The Moody Blues 1 At their best, the Moody Blua combined the orchestral splendor of the Beatles' "Sgt.

Consequently, even the band's most enduring material "Nights in White Satin" and, uhhh did! mention "Nights in White -seems wispy and under-developed. Add in the conceptual clutter and half-baked mysticism found on albums like "In Search of the Lost Chord" or "A Question of Balance," and you're left with the sort of stuff that makes even Rod McKuen seem deep. This isn't pandering to the lowest common denominator it'st lowering the lowest common denominator. Of course, Steinman and Meat Loaf are free to make whatever records they wish. But do they have to take so many millions of listeners back into musical hell with them? But it's not. It's presented as uniron-ic operatic bombast, wallowing in excess so gratuitous as to make Michael Bolton, by comparison, seem a master of understatement, One only has to consider the first track and first single, "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)." It's a second or two shy of being twelve minutes long, and it takes three minutes before it resembles anything like rock 'n' roll.
