Afenir's one-out homer came after Dan Walters had reached first when West Palm Beach reliever Bob Devlin (2-1) dropped a throw from first baseman Pat Sipe. The homer, Afenir's second of the season, erased a 2-1 Expo lead. Osceola made it 4-2 when pinch-hitter Mike Brown walked, stole second and scored on a single by Calvin James.

Rob Leary singled in Darrell Baker in the bottom of the ninth to bring the Expos within a run at 4-3. But with runners on first and second, pinch-hitter Geff Davis grounded to short to end the game. West Palm Beach starter Al Cardwood allowed just two hits in 7 innings. West Palm Beach manager Felipe Alou removed Cardwood in favor of left-handed reliever John Marino after Cardwood had walked Carlo Colombino with two out in the eighth. It was Cardwood's eighth walk.

"Cardwood pitched well," Alou said. "He was walking too many. I had to get him out of there." "I was kind of upset at first," Cardwood said. "Then I sat down and thought about it. Marino was left-handed and was getting lefthanders out.

It was a great move by Felipe Alou." Marino walked Juan Delgado. But Devlin came in and struck out pinch-hitter Gary Cooper to preserve the lead. The Expos took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on doubles by Paul Frye, Rob Leary and Card-wood. Osceola made it 2-1 on a third-inning home run by Scott Markley his first of the season. The staff had an 2.01 ERA and 278 strikeouts in 322 innings. 'Unusually talented' The U.S. team defeated thfr five minor league teams it played, including Class AAA Louisville (Cardinals) and Rochester (Baltimore). Entering the gold medal game against Japan, the U.S. team had outscored its four Olympic opponents 48-4.

"I think it was well recognized through baseball circles that it was an unusually talented team," said Texas General Manager Tom Grieve. Marzano saw that firsthand. "They're such great players," he said. "There was so much talent on that team. I haven't seen many fall on their face.

I hope they don't. It will be a little tougher for me to make it. They have a good catcher in (Rich) Gedman, but I'm not Local Corner Beach Junior College. Junior Golf Association to open season Friday LAKE WORTH The Palm Beach County Junior Golf Association opens its season Friday with a two-hour golf and rules clinic at Palm Beach National Golf and Country Club beginning at noon. The first tournament will be Monday at Palm Beach National. Tee-time for those playing 18 holes is 8 a.m.; those playing nine, seven, five and three holes tee off at noon. Sixteen of the 18-hole players in the fall of 1983, Dedeaux and his assistants selected the team from about 4,000 players who were recommended by college coaches. Some of those head coaches included Miami's Ron Fraser, Stanford's Mark Marquess and Texas' Cliff Gustafson.

"We had a good staff," Dedeaux said. "We had four coaches and an advisory committee made up of 20 coaches who I considered the top college coaches. And we had the help of major league baseball, which shared its scouting reports with us and allowed the players who had been drafted the opportunity to play. But there was an added dimension. We had to be interested in guys who could play now, not ones who had potential to play in the future." Pitching in minors Two pitchers, Mike Loynd of Texas and Greg Swindell of Cleveland, went on to pitch in the majors despite being cut from the Olympic team.

Three other players who were cut Mel Stottlemyre Ben Abner and Drew Hall are in the minor leagues. "I didn't know what to expect," said Pacillo, of East Rutherford, Game Winning RBI BarfieW (7). Pagliaruk). DP Toronto 1, New York 1. LOB Toronto 9, New York 7.

"There were 150 trying out in New Jersey in two tryouts. Then we went to the national tryout in Louisville for the weekend. Out of the 76 who went, they picked 35. Then it was cut down to 30 in early June for the tour. In mid-July the final cut was made.

I didn't really think I'd make it." With 30 players, the team embarked on a 33-city tour of the United States during June and July. The schedule included games with Class AAA and AA minor league teams, college all-star teams and national teams from Japan and Korea. The games were played in major league stadiums, and General Electric paid the traveling expenses. The team posted a 31-5-1 tour and Olympic record, and some impressive team and individual stats. Clark, of Mississippi State, was the top hitter.

In 36 games, he hit .397 with 16 home runs and 43 RBI, all team highs. McGwire hit .359 with six homers, 26 RBI and a team-leading 13 doubles. Marzano was second in hitting at .394. The team batted .315, hit 60 home runs and drove in 236 runs. The pitching was just as impressive.

McDowell's teammate on both the Olympic team and the Rangers, pitcher Bobby Witt, became a starter last season, compiling an 11-9 record with 174 strikeouts. This season, he started 1-3 before going on the disabled list May 20 with a pulled shoulder muscle. He was recently assigned to the Rangers' Class AAA Oklahoma City team for rehabilitation. Oakland Athletics' rookie first baseman Mark McGwire is the latest former Olympian to make it big.

He's second in the American League in home runs with 19 after becoming a starter April 20. "It makes you hungry," said Olympic catcher John Marzano, who plays on Boston's Class AAA Pawtucket team. "Every time I see the paper, I see a guy who I played with going up. You want to get up there, too." One out with injury Only Flavio Alfaro, the team's second baseman, is out of baseball. Alfaro, drafted by the Braves in the fourth round in 1984, retired because of a back injury.

Many major league baseball executives thought most Olympic players eventually would reach the majors, but few expected to see so many so soon. "The biggest surprise is how fast they got there," said New York Mets vice president Joe Mcllvaine. "It was a talented team. You cannot deny that. They may be able to put together an All-Star team in the future." That wouldn't surprise Olympic baseball coach Rod Dedeaux, the former University of Southern California coach.

Dedeaux, who coached 46 years at USC, said the Olympic team had the most talent he had seen on one team. "They weren't a bunch of nobodies," Dedeaux said. After organizing tryouts throughout the country beginning Game Winning RBI Lansford (3). LOB Chicago 7, Oakland 4. 2B Phillips, Boston.
