Sherman and Hoyt Sherman were elected council members. Bird died of paralysis in January 1869 and is buried with family, as well as political and religious peers, in Des Moines' Woodland Cemetery. The town of Fort Des Moines was incorporated Sept. 22, 1851. The first town election was held Oct.

Thompson Bird, came to Fort Des Moines as a missionary preacher of the Presbyterian Church. Traveling by foot, he preached in southern Iowa pioneer cabins. Bird probably left the Sbuth, where he spent his boyhood, because of his strong anti-slavery stance. He was educated at Chapel Hill College and the Theological Seminary at An-dover, Mass. In addition to being remembered as the first mayor, Bird also was the first minister of Central Presbyterian Church.

Some sources describe Bird as a respected, zealous Christian who sold a valued personal collection of autographs to pay for a 1853 B. Luce 1854 L.P. Sherman 1855 B. Granger .1856 W. DeFord church bell.
