Dally Journal, Ukiah, Calif. Tuesday, February 25,1986 Obituaries Egbert 'Speedo' Williams Redwood Valley resident Egbert R. Williams, "Speedo," 67, died Feb. 17 in a Santa Rosa hospital. The native of Mendocino County was born in Albion in 1918.

He started playing tuba in the high school band and continued after his graduation in 1936. He was active in Paul Bunyan bands on Labor Day weekends and played at local dances. In 1944, he married Margaret Montgomery Atkinson. In 1945, he received an honorable discharge from military service with an American Theater ribbon, good conduct and victory medals. He was employed most of his life as a truck driver for local companies and in later years went to work for Cal Trans Division of Highways in Orick.

He retired in 1978. No funeral services were held for Williams, and his family prefers donations to the American Heart Association. Surviving him are his wife, Margaret F. Williams of Redwood Valley; a son, Vernon Atkinson of Fort Bragg; two daughters, Pat Radelfinger of Bend, and Shirley Lorenz of Redwood Valley; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Two sisters, Virginia Backlund of Pleasanton and Edith Hilderbrand of Willits.

Larry Wright Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at Eversole Mortuary for Larry Wright, 26, of Ukiah who died Feb. 24 in a local hospital. Phil Lewis, pastor of the Potter Valley Bible Church, will officiate.

Interment will be in Ukiah Cemetery. Wright, who was born Sept. 11, 1959, had lived in the Ukiah area just six years. He was manager of Baskin-Robbins. Surviving him are his wife, Stacy Wright of Ukiah; his parents, Joseph and Verdell Wright of Ukiah; and three brothers, Loren, Lonnie and Leslie Wright, also of Ukiah.

Robert Benjamin Peck Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at Eversole Mortuary for Robert Benjamin Peck, 63, who died at his Ukiah home Feb. 21. Dean Gade, pastor of St.

John's Lutheran Church in Willits, will officiate. Interment will be in Ukiah Cemetery. Peck, who was born in Wisconsin Jan. 16,1923, has been a resident of Ukiah for the past 40 years. A member of the U.S.

Navy during World War II, he was an observation scout pilot. He worked for the Masonite Cor- portion for the past 35 years, retiring his position as senior electrical project engineer on Feb.l. Surviving him are his wife, Arlene Peck, and son, Robert W. Peck, both of Ukiah; and eight brothers and sisters: Edith Simms of Laconia, N.H.; Jesse Peck of Minneapolis, Sanford Peck of Union Pier, Arthur Peck of Mercer, Everett Peck of Denver, George Peck of Lockport, William Peck of Mason, and Lloyd Peck of Monterey. Cox Private memorial services will be held at the Ukiah Cemetery Chapel for Kelly F. Cox, Sr, 65, who died Monday, Feb. 24, in a Ukiah hospital. The Rev. Mary Casler, chaplain of Ukiah Adventist Hospital, will officiate.

Cox, who was born March 12, 1920, in Portales, N.M., was a veteran of World War. II. He belonged to Post 1900, Veterans of.Foreign Wars; Chapter 50, Disabled American Veterans; Lewis White Post 76, American Legion; Redwood Nitz 90, Military Order of the Cootie of the United States; Lodge 1728, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; and Lodge 336, Loyal Order of Moose. The veteran moved to Ukiah 40 years ago and married the former Anita Garaventa, who survives him. He sold cars in Ukiah for many years, and in more recent years worked in real estate investments.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Janis Cox of Ukiah, Joyce McGrew of Central Point, and Kelly Cox, of Kelseyville; and two grandchildren, George and Tammie McGrew of Central Point. Also surviving are his brother, Joe Cox of Raisin City; a sister, Juanita Bruegel of Dimmitt, a son in law, Troy McGrew of Central Point, and a sister in law, Agnes Cox of Ukiah. There are numerous nieces and nephews. The family prefers contributions be made in the name of Kelly Cox Sr. to Hospice, P.O.

Box 612, Ukiah; or to the American Cancer Society, 1379 Dora Ukiah. Arrangements are under the direction of Eversole Mortuary. Weather Extended forecast State summary Thursday through Saturday: Fair Thursday except patchy morning fog inland valleys and low clouds and fog along the coast. Increasing clouds Thursday afternoon in the north with a chance of rain spreading over the area Thursday night. Rain likely Friday morning turning to showers by Friday evening.

Partly cloudy Friday night. Clearing and breezy on Saturday. Above normal temperatures Thursday cooling to slightly below normal Saturday. Highs at the lower elevations in the 60s and 70s Thursday, then to the upper 50s and 60s by Saturday. Lows in the 40s to low 50s.

Mild, dry weather continues over California. Central and Southern California remained clear during the night except for fog along the coast north of Vandenburg and patchy dense fog in valleys of Central California. Some cloudiness spread into Northern California from a weak stationary weather front extending southwestward from western Oregon. Spotty drizzle was reported on the coast near the Oregon border. Early morning temperatures were quite mild ranging from the upper 40s to low 60s.

Little change is forecast for the next few days. Markets Stocks lower; technology issues weaken NEW YORK (UPI) The stock market headed lower at midday Tuesday in active trading, dragged lower by a weak technology sector. The Dow Jones industrial average, which edged up 0.57 to a record closing high of 1698.28 Monday, was down 10.67 to 1687.61 at noon EST. The New York Stock Exchange index was off 0.57 to 128.63. The price of an average share was down 18 cents.

Declines led advances 856-618 among the 1,926 issues crossing the NYSE tape. Big Board volume amounted to about 74,420,000 shares at noon, compared with 88,070,000 in the same period Monday. The Dow Jones industrial Maureen Connor-Rice Old Hopland home burns Hopland firemen and neighbors move furniture from the home of Al and Mary Yates after an early morning fire burned part of their century-old Hopland home today. Much of the furniture was wet, but not burned. See story In Fire Log, below.

Disaster hotline Mendocino County officials set up an emergency hotline in order to assess damages due to last week's major winter storm that caused flooding of homes, loss of power and washed out roads. Anyone having suffered damage to a home or business is asked to call 1-800-634-2288, toll- free, to give officials a decrip- tion of the damage. The hotline will be in operation this week only, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Planning Commission Agenda In addition to holding a public hearing for an application for a four-unit condominium on North School Street, the Ukiah Planning Commission this week will continue its discussion of a proposed ordinance dealing with local outdoor sales establishments.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Ukiah Unified School District board room, 445 S.Dora St. The commission will also address the issue of local emergency housing. A proposed ordinance, outlining definitions and functions of emergency housing, will be presented for discussion at the commission level. Highway 101 south of Benbowopen Highway 101 south of Benbow is open to traffic, the district director for Caltrans in Eureka said today.

Allen Wrenn said the Highway Patrol will convoy traffic between Benbow and Leggett, an approximate 18-mile stretch of highway, every hour on the hour today. Caltrans dispatcher Linda Frank said the Highway Patrol is escorting people along the road "because we've had a number of slides and slipouts that require drivers to slow down." -Police and Fire Log Covelo man in 101 accident Jitney Gulch Bridge, about one mile north of Leggett, is opened to traffic, Wrenn reported. In addition, Highway 1 is closed from Highway 101 to Rockport due to slides and slipouts. Safety devices, such as temporary concrete barriers, are being installed on this route. Wrenn said he anticipates all the barriers to be in place by Feb.

Sald went A 39-year-old Covelo man apparently fell asleep at the wheel, lost control of his pickup truck and careened up an embankment, overturning the vehicle Monday evening, California Highway Patrol reports indicate. Carl Kruger sustained minor injuries in the accident which occurred at about 7:15 p.m. on Highway 101 north of Willits, according to the CHP.

Kruger was taken to Howard Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and later released. He had been traveling south along Highway 101, just south of Shimmins Ridge Road, when the accident occurred. in Firefighters saved a large portion of a century old Hopland home early this morning, but major damage was done to the kitchen and attic. The house, located on Howell Street in Old Hopland, is owned by Al and Mary Yates who moved there two years ago from Los Angeles. Mary left for work at 6 and Hopland Volunteers were there.

California Department of Forestry also responded. No one was injured, not even the six tropical fish that had just acquired a new aquarium. No estimate of the damage has been made. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Yateses don't know what started the blaze, but mentioned that the wood stove was lit.
