Chuck Otterson national title using a formula that called for long hours on the practice field, working on every facet of the game until it became second nature. "He really taught me how to work," Furmanik said.

"I give him and my father all the credit. My dad taught me the basics. Mr. Shaw taught me everything else. Of course, there's still a lot to learn." PBJC pitcher Kevin Roberts and first baseman-DH Doug Rogalski also played for Jensen Beach last summer, as did three Indian River Community College players outfielder Brian Reimsnyder, pitcher Rusty Meacham and first baseman Jon Anderson.

Their teammates included Joe Grahe, the No. 1 pitcher at the University of Miami, and Florida Atlantic University catcher Chris Hirsch. "I think the main thing we learned," Furmanik said, "was that every game you play hard but it's just another game. There's a little more riding on it when it's in a tournament like this but you just go out and play. If you've worked hard, it'll show." A 6-foot-l, 200-pound switch-hitter, Furmanik is not built along the lines of such classic shortstops as Ozzie Smith and Maury Wills.

"I'm not the fastest guy around," he said, "but I've played there ever since I was old enough to have ground balls hit to me. "I pitched all through little league, high school and Babe Ruth ball, but I'd rather play shortstop. I like to play every day. I'm not one for sitting on the bench." Furmanik hasn't been forced to spend much time on the bench, although he had to make believers out of a few people in 1985, his first year as a switch-hitter. "I was told I couldn't hit," he said.

"It kind of upset me because I always worked hard at it. So I wanted to prove myself. I was fortunate enough to lead the (CABA) World Series in hitting that year (.520 in 15 games)." Nobody expected Furmanik to continue hitting .520, but he has been remarkably consistent the past two years. For Jensen Beach, he ended the regular season batting .331. For PBJC.

he went into the state tournament hitting .333. Gailey just hopes the similarities continue. 1 1 WINTER HAVEN Dan Furmanik started playing baseball in Hawaii when he was 4 years old. By his own admission, there was little reason to suspect that he would have any particular success at the sport, let alone develop a habit of winning national championships. "I played little league, but we were never any good," Furmanik said.

"Especially me. I was the worst." By the time Furmanik was 15, he had returned from Honolulu to his native Massachusetts and moved again to Tennessee, where he began his remarkable string of state and national titles. It's a habit PBJC coach Randy Gailey has no desire to see him break. Furmanik, 19, played on the Conway Twitty-sponsored Henderson-ville, team that bested a field of state champions from 47 other states and Canada to win the Continental America Baseball Association championship at Columbus, Ohio, in 1985. Last summer he played on the Jensen Beach Post 126 team that won the American Legion World Series at Rapid City, S.D.

Now he's playing shortstop for Gailey's aim Beach Junior College team in the Florida Junior College Tournament at Chain O' Lakes Park. "I'm trying to keep it going," Furmanik said before Saturday's opening-round 10-2 loss to nationally ranked Florida Community College of Jacksonville. "It's really fun. It's a nice experience not to end the season with a loss. "I've been fortunate enough to' end the season with a win the last four years.

We won the Senior Babe Ruth state tournament in Tennessee four years ago and the Mickey Mantle state tournament the year after that." Gailey certainly wouldn't mind seeing Furmanik extend that streak to five. "Is that an omen?" Gailey said of Furmanik's championship background. "I sure hope so. "He's done a good job for us this year. Shortstop was a major concern at the end of the fall.

We had Mike Boswell at short and Furmanik at third; then we flip-flopped them and Dan really picked up the slack. "Having played on two national-championship teams, he knows A hat it takes to win. He's shown a of leadership for a freshman." Furmanik. however, plays down nis leadership contributions. "If we're going to win," he said, 'it's not going to be a leader, it's going to be a team.

It's not one person all the time; it's everybody picking each other up. When you a in. it not as individuals, but as a earn. "Jensen Beach didn't have a eader on the field. Off the field, it as Mr.
