That's when the Hurricanes began their domination. SECOND GUESS Nothing Miami of Ohio tried worked, but there was nothing else it could try against an obviously more skilled, faster and stronger Hurricane team. WORTH MENTIONING HOLDER INJURED: UMs center Ron Holder injured his left knee late in the first quarter and was carried off the field by stretcher. He was admitted to Miami's Doctors' Hospital, where he will undergo arthroscopic surgery.

His status will be further evaluated today. Sophomore Bobby Garcia replaced Holder. MIRA RETURNS: Miami middle linebacker George Mira Jr. returned to his starting position against Miami of Ohio Saturday, and continued his assault on the all-time UM record for tackles. Mira, who missed last week's game against East Carolina because of a bruised deltoid muscle, started the game 49 tackles shy of Scott Nicolas' record of 456.

IRVIN CATCHING UP: Junior wide receiver Michael Irvin edged closer to Larry Brodsky's school record of at least one catch in 31 consecutive games. Irvin increased his streak to 29 games in the first quarter against Miami of Ohio. STREAKS: Among Miami's many streaks in the Jimmy Johnson era are consecutive Orange Bowl victories and consecutive wins over unranked teams. The Hurricanes extended both Saturday night against Miami of Ohio. UM is now 24-0 against unranked teams and has won 13 straight games at the Orange Bowl, a school record.

SCALP 'EM: When Miami of Ohio defeated LSU last season at Baton Rouge, it was what the Redskins refer to as a Tomahawk Victory. A Tomahawk Victory is an upset over non conference foes. Prior to the win at LSU, the Redskins called its 10-7 upset of Purdue in 1962 it's greatest win. Other significant upsets include: Kentucky (15-14) in 1979, Indiana (21-20) in 1977, Purdue (14-3) in 1975, Tangerine Bowl victories over South Carolina (20-7) in 1975, Georgia (21-10) in 1974 and Florida (16-7) in 1973, Purdue (24-19) in 1973, South Carolina (13-1 1) in 1973 and South Carolina (21-8) in 1972. NO BOWL: The Redskins' shot at a bowl game were dashed Thursday night by Eastern Michigan.

EMU defeated Toledo 38-9, assuring itself of at least a tie for 60 TAX 50 TAX 1,260 1,050 yardage. A personal foul penalty kept the drive alive. The Hurricanes could only manage a 46-yard Greg Cox field goal in the first quarter. But the rapid-fire offense got in gear on the first play of the second quarter as Walsh threw an 18-yard scoring pass to Warren Williams. The Hurricanes got the ball back as George Mira Jr.

recovered a fumble by Redskins quarterback Mark Kuzma and Walsh connected with Irvin four plays later. Then it was the defense's turn to make its point. After the offense was held scoreless on its next drive, backup defensive end Earnie Parish tackled Kuzma in the end zone. Parish's safety was the Hurricanes' first safety in two years, and the first safety of the season that long snapper Willis Peguese was not a part of. Randal Hill's 40-yard return of the free kick set up Walsh's third touchdown pass of the half, this one to Indiantown's Cleveland Gary, which covered 9 yards.

Miami concluded the first-half onslaught on Williams' 5-yard run with 39 seconds to play in the half. The Hurricanes scored on five-of-six first-half possessions. The drive was set up by Dan Stubbs' fumble recovery. Stubbs also had two sacks in the half. The Hurricanes' 30-point quarter broke the record established last year at West Virginia when Miami scored 28 points in the second quarter.

The Redskins were able to reach the Hurricanes end zone, but a 35-yard pass from Kuzma to Bart Let-cavits was called back because of offensive interference. Miami of Ohio coach Tim Rose objected enough to draw an unsportsmanlike penalty. The Hurricanes got the ball back, and it took one play for Bratton to set the record. Bratton then scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Gary added his second touchdown on a 5-yard run witn 6:36 to play in the game. HURRICANESfrom 1C Miami of Ohio, which still has a chance to share the official MAC title, is 5-5.

It was the worst loss for the Redskins since 1942 when Dartmouth beat them 58-7. "I feel like we've made some improvements over a week ago," said UM coach Jimmy Johnson. "We were a lot sharper offensively and defensively. The Hurricanes, who gave false hope to Cincinnati and East Carolina the last two weeks by keeping the first half close, left no doubt in the Redskins' minds with a school-record 30-point second quarter. Miami led 33-0 at halftime, scoring four less points in the half than the Redskins had in total offense.

Quarterback Steve Walsh was 18-of-26 for 216 yards and four touchdown passes, including a 35-yarder to Melvin Bratton early in the third quarter. Bratton's 26th career touchdown broke the all-time school record. Bratton, who added his 27th early in the fourth quarter, passed Alonzo Highsmith and Eddie Dunn, who scored 25 touchdowns each. "I wanted this record in front of my home fans and to have my mom share it with me," said Bratton. "It's a special thing for me to get it here in the Orange Bowl." Record not safe Bratton's record is by no means safe.

Junior wide receiver Michael Irvin scored on an 11-yard pass, giving him 24 career touchdowns. Miami of Ohio avoided the shutout when Gary Gussman kicked a 44-yard field goal with six seconds to play. Gussman, who was born in Miami, was carried of the field on his teammates' shoulders. The Redskins actually held the ball for 7:10 on their opening possession, getting three of their four first-half first downs. The fourth came on a roughing-the-kicker call.
