Girls wear 'about 810,000' worth of gowns PARADEfrom IB spectator Philip Kaufman, adding that high school students gain public attention when they do something wrong. About 12 girls, dressed in pearls, gloves, parasols and what one parent described as "about $10,000 worth of prom gowns," road atop Mercedes Benz, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari convertibles. But only one would be crowed queen during halftime at the football game Saturday "I swear it was the most exciting moment of my life," said University of Florida freshman Lisa Johnson who, as last year's queen, rode atop the queen candidate's float- New Okeechobee Amtrak stop opens AMTRAKfrom IB senger cross-walk at the stationa requirement for the Amtrak stop. The new stop was established after more than 3,000 local residents signed a petition requesting the service. Amtrak also received nearly 400 letters from local residents requesting the stop, Leatherwood said. The stop will be on a trial basis for the first two years. Six passengers per day, boarding and departing the train on the two daily stops, will make the move a success, said Charles Dunn, president of the Florida Coalition of Rail Passengers. Dunn is optimistic, however, because Palatka, a North Florida fishing community of about 11,000 residents, has an average of 24 passengers a day boarding or leaving an Amtrak train. He said the community, in a county with 20,000 people, Is similar in many ways to Okeechobee "This is really fantastic," said Okeechobee resident Cristina Marquez, who rode the Silver Meteor from West Palm Beach to Okeechobee Saturday. "This will make transportation easier for some of our northern visitors." Mayor Oakland Chapman, who broke a ceremonial bottle of champagne on the train, said, "This is going to be very good for Okeechobee." "I think this is something the city has needed for a lone time," said City Councilman R.R. "Nick" Collins. Passengers can buy tickets at area travel agencies, or by making advance reservations with Amtrak by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL. J. : V""V ; rL . w ' 4 V -vV Before: J ! 3061b..
