The Salina Journal Sunday, September 24,1995 D3 COLLEGE FOOTBALL Huskers run wild in win Nebraska piles up 569 yards rushing in win The Associated Press LINCOLN, Neb. Damon Benning ran for three touchdowns and No. 2 Nebraska piled up 569 rushing yards before calling in the reserves and coasting to a 49-7 victory over Pacific on Saturday. Benning finished with 173 yards before leaving with a sprained ankle in the third quarter. He had missed two games with a pulled hamstring.

Nebraska probably could have scored more points. Three drives in the fourth quarter stalled within the Pacific 30-yard line. There were no field goal attempts. The 731 yards of offense was Nebraska's fifth-highest total ever. The Huskers (4-0) were not as sharp as in the record- breaking half Sept.

16 against Arizona State (63 points and 508 total yards). But it was 35-0 at half time and Nebraska rushers already had 343 yards. Still, quarterback Tommie Frazier struggled with his throws. He finished 6-for-14 for 90 yards and an interception, with some dropped passes and overthrows. Brook Berringer was 9-for-17 for 57 yards.

Nebraska quarterbacks, who came into the game averaging 10 throws, attempted 36 passes and gained 162 yards in the air. Pacific (1-3) didn't cross midfield until 6:59 in the third quarter on the its only scoring drive. Nick Sellers found Eric Atkins with a 38- yard pass to the Nebraska 33 to set up a 12-yard scoring pass to Tyrone Watley. Pacific finished with 60 yards rushing and just 197 yards overall. Roger Fleenor punted 11 times.

Benning's 26-yard run opened the scoring and capped a seven-play, 80-yard drive. After a 33-yard punt return by Kenny Cheatham to the Pacific 17, Benning scored on the next play for a 14-0 lead. Nebraska forced two more punts and Kris Brown missed a 30-yard field-goal attempt before Benning scored his third touchdown. Nebraska converted a fourth-and-1, Benning ran 43 yards for the score to put Nebraska ahead 21-0 with 4:57 left in the first quarter.

Ahman Green and James Sims added touchdown runs in the second quarter. Green finished with 112 yards and two touchdowns, his second straight week with at least 100 yards. OKLAHOMA 51, N. TEXAS 10 At Norman, No. 10 Oklahoma scored 34 second-half points to beat North Texas in a lukewarm tuneup for next week's Big Eight Conference opener against No.

7 Colorado. Backup quarterback Garrick McGee threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score, and Jeff Frazier had a late 96-yard touchdown run as the Sooners (3-0) wore down outmanned North Texas (13), which is in its first year as a Division I school. Oklahoma's defense dominated the Eagles and bought time until the offense could get going. The Sooners committed three turnovers in a sloppy first half that saw each team give up a safety, including North Texas' snap through the end zone on a punt when the punter wasn't even on the field. The Associated Press Saturday to lead Wyoming to a victory over Oklahoma State. Wallwork, who was 18-of-25 passing, left early in the third quarter with bruised ribs. All three of Oklahoma State's touchdowns came on short second- half runs by quarterback Tone Jones, who also completed 12 of 31 passes for a season-high 169 yards.

MISSOURI 31, NE LOUISIANA 22 At Columbia, Brock Olivo scored three first-half touchdowns and rushed for a career-high 222 yards on 38 carries as Missouri closed out its non-conference schedule with a 3122 victory over Northeast Louisiana Saturday. Olivo scored on runs of 16, 1 and 3 yards, scored on a conversion pass and had 127 yards at the half, two short of his previous season high, as Missouri (2-2) jumped to a 28-7 lead. He's only the third player in school history to top 200 yards and the second sophomore to reach 1,000 career yards, joining Darrell Wallace. Olivo, who entered the year with one touchdown, was held to 28 yards last week in a 41-14 loss at Texas Tech. His total is the most since Wallace ran for 224 yards against Kansas State in 1985.

Harry Ice holds the school record with 240 yards on eight carries in 1941. The Tigers are off to their best start since 1991 but had to hang on for the victory over Northeast Louisiana (1-3), in its second year in Division I-A. Northeast lost 66-14 at Colorado last week. Virginia Tech dumps Hurricanes By The Associated Press The depth of Miami's slide became crystal clear Saturday when the Hurricanes fell 13-7 at Virginia Tech, their first loss- to an unranked team in 11 years. Dwayne Thomas ran for 165 yards and a touchdown and an aggressive, blitzing defense had six tackles behind the line of scrimmage and six sacks for 70 yards.

A mass of fans stormed the field to celebrate the first victory by Virginia Tech (2-1, 1-1 Big East) over Miami (1-2, 0-1) in 13 meetings. It came one week after a loss to mediocre Cincinnati. "Our players showed character; they have been under the gun with a lot of criticism directed at them," Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. "The im! portant thing today is that we found the Virginia Tech team, the one we knew we had the potential to be." No. 17 Miami isn't close to the team it used to be when it dominated college football and always was contending for the national championship.

Miami was held to 51 yards rushing. FLORIDA STATE 46, CENTRAL FLORIDA 14 At Tallahas- Pooh Bear Williams scored three touchdowns and Danny Kanell threw for two as top-ranked Florida State took a victory over feisty Division I-AA Central Florida. Despite being outplayed for much the first half, Florida State (4-0) advantage of Central Florida's problems in its kicking game to take a 23-7 half time lead. Central Florida (2-1) missed two field goal attempts and also surrendered a safety when an errant snap a punt sailed into the end zone or they may have trailed by just a touchdown after the first half, 0HIO STATE 54, PITTSBURGH 14 At Pittsburgh, Terry Glenn caught nine passes for a school-record 253 yards and four touchdowns Saturday as eighth- ranked Ohio State wore down out- manned Pittsburgh 54-14. Glenn, a starter for the first time this season after backing up current NFL players Joey Galloway and Chris Sanders in 1994, was open for most of the afternoon and scored on passes of 75,61, 36 and 12 yards from Bobby Hoying.

The Associated Press Virginia Tech's Dwayne Thomas dives for a touchdown in Saturday's game with the Miami Hurricanes. Hoying completed 15-of-24 passes for 296 yards and five touchdowns in three quarters. Eddie George gained 121 yards on 24 carries in little over a half and now has 433 yards in the Buckeyes' three wins. VIRGINIA 22. CLEMSON 3 At Clemson, S.C., Mike Groh ran for one touchdown and threw for one as llth-ranked Virginia chased away years of Death Valley demons with a victory over Clemson.

The Cavaliers (4-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) put up two first- quarter touchdowns and Groh threw a clinching 76-yard score to Patrick Jeffers for their first victory in 19 games at Clemson's Memorial Stadium. After Groh's 1-yard dive and Tiki Barber's twisting 11-yard touchdown, Virginia sat back and watched the Tigers fall victim to the same strange phenomena that plagued the Cavaliers since 1956. NOTRE DAME 55, TEXAS 27 At South Bend, Marc Ed- IOWA ST. 57, UNLV 30 At Ames, Iowa, Troy Davis scored five touchdowns to tie a school record and became the first Iowa State player to run for more than 300 yards in a game, leading the Cyclones to a victory over UNLV. Davis, the nation's leading rusher, carried 36 times for 302 yards in less than three quarters to break the school record of 291 yards he set in this year's opener against Ohio University.

The 5-foot-8, 185-pound sophomore scored on runs of 20, 8 and 66 yards as Iowa State (2-2) took a 378 halftime lead against the dispirited Rebels (1-3). Davis then sprinted 80. yards up the middle for a touchdown on the first play of the second half and left the game for good after a 5-yard touchdown run with 5:39 left in the third quarter. Graston Norris added a 91-yard touchdown run the second- longest in Iowa State history as the Cyclones rushed for a school- record 586 yards and finished with 648 total yards. The old rushing record was 445 yards against Colorado State in 1980.

WASHINGTON STATE 24, UCLA 15 At Pullman, Jay Dumas returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown as Washington State built a 24-0 lead over No.

16 UCLA, then hung on Washington State Pacific- 10) manhandled the Bruins in the first half, holding UCLA to 38 yards while running up 239. For the second consecutive week, UCLA (2-2, 0-2 Pac-10) was unable to complete a second-half comeback, despite an animated sideline pep talk by coach Terry Donahue during a timeout early in the third period. WASHINGTON 21, ARMY 13 At Seattle, Damon Huard threw a touchdown pass to Andre DeSaus- sure and scored on a keeper in the fourth quarter as No. 22 Washington finally overcame Army's ball-controlling wishbone. The game ended with the Cadets, out of timeouts, with fourth down on the Washington 1-yard line as the clock ran out.

Army had a 36:4623:14 advantage in possession time. MARYLAND 41, DUKE 28 At College Park, Brian Cummings threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns as No. 24 Maryland improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1978 by beating Duke. Cummings, starting in place of the suspended Scott Milanovich, was 19- for-27 as the Terrapins (2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) defeated Duke for the 19th time in 22 games. Fort Hays thumps Nebraska-Kearney RMAC By The Journal Staff HAYS Senior tailback Clint Bedore rushed for 106 yards on 20 carries and scored two touchdowns and quarterback Shawn Behr threw for 281 yards and one touchdown Saturday night as Fort Hays State crushed Nebraska-Kearney 31-6 at Lewis Field Stadium.

The victory raises the Kearne 6 Tigers' record Fort Hays 31 to 2-1-1. Nebraska-Kearney falls to 1-2-1. Fort Hays State jumped on top 21-3 in the first quarter on Bedore's 1-yard touchdown run, a 7-yard touchdown run by Emmett Pride and a 77-yard touchdown pass from Behr to Lance Schwindt. The Tigers led 24-6 at halftime after Jason Browning kicked a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter. Bedore scored the only points of the second half on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Placekicker Mike Rowen accounted for all of Nebraska- Kearney's points with field goals of 21 and 36 yards. Freshman running back Mike Lodice led the Antelopes with 154 yards rushing on 25 carries. Fort Hays State finished with 427 yards total offense and Nebraska-Kearney 424. The Antelopes ran 83 offensive plays, the Tigers 63. But Nebraska-Kearney quarterback Mike Smith completed just 19 of 43 passes with one interception.

Behr was 13 of 24 passing with no interceptions. Schwindt caught three passes for 151 yards and Kahn Powell six for 74 yards. The Tigers open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Durango, against Fort Lewis. Mac pulls off major upset By Staff and Wire Reports WINFIELD McPherson quarterback Rudolph James scored on a 6-yard run as McPherson upset Southwestern 36-29 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday.

The win was the Bulldogs first since the 1993 season and first for second- year head coach Bruce Grose. James had another rushing touchdown on the day and also threw two scoring strikes. He finished with 212 yards passing and 73 yards rushing. James hit Trevor Carney with a 20-yard touchdown in the first quarter as the Bulldogs built an 18-0 lead midway through the second quarter. The Bulldogs held a 28-7 lead at the half, before Southwestern made it interesting late.

Heath Starns led the Mound- builders on the ground with 112 yards on 19 carries. Mark Sasser threw for 212 yards for Southwestern. Josh Bradford caught four Sasser passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. OTTAWA 28, STERLING 20 At Sterling, Chris Welch scored on a 15-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter as Ottawa held off Sterling in a KCAC game. Welch finished with 132 yards rushing on 28 carries.

Ottawa improves to 2-0 in the KCAC and 3-0 overall. Sterling drops to 0-1, 0-3. MIDAMERICA NAZARENE 23, WILLIAM JEWELL1 3 At Olathe, Jermaine Peacock itished for 126 yards as MidAmerica Nazarene beat William Jewell in a Heart of America Athletic Conference game. The Pioneers (3-0 overall, 2-0. HAAC) took a 10-0 halftime lead on a 39-yard field goal by Bryan Clegg and a 3-yard run by Trey Hinkson.

William Jewell got a 20-yard field goal by Ryan Clutter in the- fourth quarter. Jerry Hayes then returned the Cardinals' kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown and Chris Dye returned an interception 44 yards for a TD with less than one minute left..
