15, 1987, WILL RECEIVE A 20 DISCOUNT By TOM D'ANGELO Palm Beach Post Staff Writer GREENVILLE, N.C. The Jumbo Package was of little use to East Carolina Saturday. Miami receiver Brian Blades caught two touchdown passes, both against the Pirates' special defense, in the Hurricanes' 41-3 victory at Ficklen Stadium. Blades had five receptions to wrest the team lead from Michael Irvin. Blades has 22 receptions.

Irvin's four catches Saturday give him 21. Blades scored the first touchdown of the game on a 5-yarder from quarterback Steve Walsh. He made the score 28-3 with a 9-yard reception in the third quarter. Both times, Blades was one-on-one, first beating defensive back Junior Robinson, then another defensive back, Ed Brogden. In the Jumbo Package, ECU brings in eight bigger, slower players (linemen and linebackers), leaving the wide receivers one-on-one.

The scheme is designed to defense a three-tight end formation. On both, of Blades touchdowns, Miami appeared to be in a three-tight end set until Charles Henry came off the field. "They thought we were going to bring in three tights," Blades said. "What we did was bring in a tight end, and send a tight end out. That kind of confused them." Walsh calls the play in the huddle and signals at the line of scrimmage to the side where he'll throw.

"He checks off to a slant to take advantage of the man-to-man outside," Blades said. "The safety was lined up strong, which was Irvin's side. So I knew he'd be coming to me." "We call ourselves the 'Bomb Blades said of Miami's receiving corps. "We're all very close. Michael and I are two different types of receivers.

Miami scored on the next play to open a 21-3 lead. TURNING POINT two-play sequence turned this game into a rout. McKin-ney's fumble was recovered by Bill Hawkins and Warren Wil-Hams ran 18 yards on the next play for the Miami touchdown. SECOND GUESS i Miami was leading 7-3 late in ithe second quarter when East Carolina faced a second-and-2 Miami's 28. ECU called a i screen pass that was perfectly defensed, instead of taking ad-I vantage of a running game that was successful early in the game.

With two chances, a first- down seemed inevitable. The Pi-j rates lost a yard on the next play and then Chuck Berleth missed I a 46-yard field goal attempt. QUOTES 'It was so demoralizing. Our defense made adjustments at the half, and we were able to take it to STEVE WALSH MIAMI QUARTERBACK WORTH MENTIONING BRETT'S BACK: Wide receiv er Brett Perriman caught his first pass of the season late in the first quarter on his first pay of the year. Perriman, who broke a bone in his foot Aug. 22, made a key 28-yard catch on third-and- 10 from the Miami 25. Perriman finished with three catches for 45 yards.

STREAKING: Michael Irvin kept his consecutive game re ception streak alive early in the first quarter. Irvin has caught a pass in 28 straight games. Larry Brodsky holds the school record with a catch in 31 straight games. MIRA OVERTAKEN: Line backer George Mira who did not start because of an ininrpd 7 snouiaer, was passed Dy linebacker Rod Carter on the tackle chart. It's the first time in three years Mira is not the team's leading tackier.

Carter had 13 tackles Saturday and has 75 for the season. Mira has 64. LATE ARRIVALS: East Caroli na is known for its late-arriving crowds. About a half-hour before Saturday's 12:10 p.m. kickoff, about 3,000 people were in Ficklen Stadium.

That number was at 20,000 for kickoff. The stadium was finally 80 percent filled for the start of the second quarter. TIGHT AT THE TOP: Four Hur ricanes each scored their fourth touchdown of the season, tying leader Melvin Bratton. Leonard Conley, Warren Williams, Brian Blades and Cleveland Gary are tied with Bratton for the team lead. Blades equalled his career best with two touchdown receptions.

STUBBS CELEBRATES: Dan Stubbs broke a four-game drought by recording his first sack since the Florida game. After Stubbs tackled ECU quarterback Travis Hunter for a 9-yard loss, he raised his arms to the sky, as if saying, "finally." THE GAME'S THE SAME: Miami was allowing 1 2.4 points per game entering the East Carolina game. For those of you who think this defense is any better or worse than last year's, consider, in 1986 Miami allowed 12.4 points per game. BILL Of all the Hurricanes, it was Bill Hawkins not Dan Stubbs, not Michael Irvin, not Steve Walsh who was honored with a big green sign that read the Bill Hawkins Fan Club. presented by MINOLTA I outspoken." The squadron got one of its mem bers back this week as Brett Pern- man returned with three catches for 45 yards. Irvin, Blades and Per riman form perhaps the most dangerous group of receivers in the country. "It's been a long time," said Per riman, who returned from a broken foot suffered in a preseason scrimmage. "I was real anxious. When I got in there they wanted to test me." Perriman passed that test with a 28-yard reception on his first play.

"With Brett in there it makes our offense that much better," Blades said. If Walsh is the bombardier, then the leader of the squadron is Irvin. The preseason All-America has been receiving all the attention. Now, with Blades having the best year of his career (he has passed last year's total of 18 catches and likely will break his career best of 30) and Perriman back, Irvin will be sharing the spotlight. "It's easy to get to the top, but man is it tough to stay on top of that mountain, said Irvin, who has just five receptions for 41 yards in the last two games.

"I come out there sometimes and I look up and I see two or three (defenders) and have to shake my head and I say, 'OK, maybe I'll make one Then I open my eyes and those guys are still there, nobody has disappeared. So I have to just go play ball." Brian and Bennie Blades suffered bruised shoulders, Brian the left and Bennie the right, and defensive tackle Greg Mark had a bruised foot. Although Bennie Blades has injured that shoulder before, none of the injuries appear serious enough for the players to miss Saturday's game against Miami of Ohio. Miami's next drive ended with Walsh's third interception of the season. East Carolina moved the ball again, consuming 5:00, before Berleth's missed field goal.

"I actually thought we played fairly well in the first half," Johnson said. "East Carolina didn't get the points, but they moved the football. I knew as the game went along we'd get a lot stronger because we played a lot of second-teamers in the second quarter." Last year, Miami was noted for its shotgun starts and burying stunned opponents early in the game. This year, the Hurricanes have taken longer to get warmed up. Miami has scored 100 first-half points, compared to 143 in the second half, including 74 in the third quarter.

"We need to work on our point of attack," Irvin said. "We need to come out and say, 'Hey, it's the first quarter, let's throw 24 points on the board and put them Walsh's third touchdown pass of the game his 10th of the season came with 5:42 to play in the third quarter. Blades was open on a slant pattern, just as he had been in the first quarter. Blades finished with five receptions for 65 yards. The Hurricanes exited the field with the weekly accusations of running up the score, this time from overzealous East Carolina supporters.

But Johnson, weary of the finger pointing, succumbed to recent criticism by altering his offense. "We tied down (backup quarterback Craig) Erickson a little bit at the end," Johnson said of the freshman from Cardinal Newman. "I told him I just didn't want him to throw the ball a whole lot. I wanted to keep the ball on the ground." Miami flexes muscles for second-half rout DEFENSE Tackles Sacks UT A Tot NoYds Bratton 1 0 1 Berry 0 1 1 Dawkins 0 1 1 Bain 4 2 6 R. Miami hurt itself with three big penalties in the first quarter and East Carolina was able to control the ball. Miami kept East Carolina's scoring drive a 19-yard field goal by Chuck Berleth alive on defensive tackle Jimmie Jones' offside penalty on third-and-3 and Bubba McDowell's offside penalty on Ber-leth's first attempt, which negated McDowell's block.

Michael Irvin, who had two touchdown passes called back because of penalties, was called for motion on the first early in the second quarter. "It's like somebody telling you you won $1 million and 'then saying, 'Oops, wrong Irvin said. "After the second one it just wasn't meant to be." After Miami took a 7-0 lead on Blades' first touchdown catch, East Carolina consumed 8:12 on its scoring drive. Hunter and fullback Anthony Simpson keyed ECU's run-and-shoot offense. Hunter finished the game 1 l-of-15 for 1 15 yards and the Pirates were 14-of-21, but they only attempted five passes in the first half, completing four.

Typically, the Hurricanes trailed in time of possession by seven minutes. "Our defensive plan was to contain," Johnson said. "Normally we are a forcing style of defense. But we were so concerned about their big-play ability and the speed they have at quarterback and fullback and at wide receiver 'and tailback. We were concerned."
