A sad aspect of the Kishwaukee Symphony's recent history is the damage done to its funding by federal cutbacks on money for the arts. Those moves force Illinois' cultural agencies to trim their contributions, too. This limits opportunities for music students, who occupy about one-third of the symphony's chairs.

The Kishwaukee Symphony depends on regular grants from the Illinois Arts Council, the Mary Stevens Trust and the Wurlitzer Foundation for its existence. Later in his teens, Clemens traveled to play in several groups, but when his parents could not afford a new saxophone, he switched to the oboe. Before joining the music faculty at NIU in 1959, he taught music in Ohio and Michigan public schools. "During the years I taught, I felt I had to do what my teachers did," Clemens admits.

"I learned to play all the instruments in an orchestra, but I haven't done much with them since 1959." When Clemens accepted Lane's invitation, he loaned her an oboe made in 1901. At that point, she hadn't touched the instrument in 10 years, so she plays second oboe at Kishwaukee while Clemens is the principal oboist for the symphony. "When the Kishwaukee Symphony Tint started, it was primarily a group of string instrument players," Clemens says. To take on more kinds of music, any orchestra needs a good distribution of instruments. This is the way all com-m unity orchestras grow, from 10 or 15 string instruments to include woodwind, brass and percussion sections." Wilbur Smith brought an extensive musical background to the Kishwaukee group when he joined in 1983.

At that time, he also finished a 32-year career as principal clarinetist and soloist with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra. Before making this concurrent commitment. Smith came to DeKalb in 1949 to serve as director of the Northern Illinois State Teachers College Bands until 1984. He continued teaching clarinet until 1994.
