M'MLLLm S. GILMtIRE r- -i BREST t33' M-miH FROM THE DIRECTOR OF "BEVERLY HILLS COP." DIE HARDfrom ID against them. Barefoot and only nominally armed, he relies on ingenuity and 1 1 years of police experience to outsmart the bad guys and their sophisticated weapons. (Imagine Rambo trapped in a skyscraper, and you get the picture.) Willis makes a surprisingly effective action hero, perhaps because the non-stop activity doesn't give him time to be as obnoxious as he usually is. (His stunt double, on the other hand, must have worked overtime.) It's Alan Rickman, however, who steals the movie as terrorist leader Hans Gruber.

Die Hard is the first film for the actor, best known for his work on stage in Les Liasons Dangereuses, and he's a terrific presence. His Gruber is a sophisticated man he reads Forbes and is versed in international fashion with a calm demeanor and a deep, rich voice, but he's a deadly adversary. "Have no illusions," he tells his prisoners. "We are in charge." Other performers make impressions good and bad in smaller roles. Reginald Veljohnson is fine as a lone Los Angeles cop who communicates with McClane from outside, and Alexander Godunov is chilling as Gruber's vicious assistant.

William Atherton, however, is ill-used as an ambitious newscast-' er; Paul Gleason is his usual repel-. lent self as a pompous police off i- cial; and Hart Bochner is so bad as a corporate toady that his fate is a relief. Directed by John McTiernan. Screenplay by Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza, based on the novel by Roderick Thorp.

RATED Violence, language, drugs. But technology is the real star here. Director John McTiernan (Predator) and his battery of technicians know exactly what they're doing, and they cram their movie with climax after climax. Screenwriters Jeb Stuart and Steven E.

de Souza also know which buttons to push to guarantee reactions, and the buzzwords include "terrorism" and "the family." As much as I admire McTier-nan's skill, I can't say I like Die Hard, although I enjoyed it the way I do an occasional roller-coaster ride. I can recommend it, because it's the epitome of what many people expect from a film, and it will probably be a hit of monstrous proportions. Today SOUTH PALM BEACHES BOCA MALL 6, 394 N.
