AUGUST 23, 1956 HE ftHINlLAtofcEtt (W1S.) DAItlf NEWS PAGE IS You Find What You What You Don't Want Thousands Play Football But Pros Shout for Help By HARRY GRAYSON NEA Sports Editor Coaches who watched the BaltN more Colts come from behind to win, pointed out that the Philadelphia Eagles need a full- bnck and an offensive tackle among other things. Hughie Devore isn't one to discuss the shortcomings of his ath- Iftes, but when is suggested that the holes be plugged before the professionals start teeing off for keeps, the Eagles' new coach iisks, "And just where am I going to get them?" Every National League club has its problems, including the champion Browns. The only difference is that the Cleveland outfit has fewer of them. Practically every fall you hear that college squads are loaded Ohio State. Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Maryland, Michigan.

Michigan State, Southern California, UCLA, Georgia Tech, Texas, Duke and numerous others in all sections. To the average follower of foot- bnll, it is inconceivable that with all the thousands of hand-picked young men playing the college game under skillful coaches that 12 professional clubs cannot line up near perfect personnel. But for the bulk of college stars, the hop from college to the money ranks appears to be as long as the one from high school to the higher grade. And anyone who has suited up for fotball will tell you that the latter jump would practically win a place on the Olympic team. Close observers wonder how Paul Brown of the Browns named after him short-changed the Pittsburgh Steelers out of Ed Modzelewski.

This swap best illustrates why Coach Brown has been as successful with the pros as he was at Washington High of Massillon, 0., with Ohio State and in the service. Brown, you see, knows football players and where to find them. When Brown landed Big Mo Modzelewski all 6 feet and 215 pounds of him and talked Otto Graham into playing one more year, he had the old formula strength through the middle. Just like in baseball, where you must possess the catcher, double play combination and the center fielder. Brown had his old and proven formula Gatski at center, Graham at quarter and at fullback.

Brown had Lou Groza and a big guard on one side as his offensive tackles. Then, Mike McCormack, obtained in a trade, came through to give the Browns devastating blocking on both sides and an un- stoppabltf, two-pronged attack. Philadelphia has had its fullback headache for several years. The Eagles drafted Neil Worden of No tn- Dame, found him good but not good and big enough. Then the Eagles went for Dick Bielski.

the Maryland All-America, who in addition to seemingly having all the physical attributes at 0-1 and 215 pounds, turned out to be a place-kicker second only to The Toe Groza. But, to their utter dismay, the Eagles discovered that it took Bielski a step and a half to get his power rolling. That's fatal, because the fullback is the bread-and-butter man who must pick up that vital one. two or three yards in a key series, or more important, when the club is shooting for pay dirt. This was made more noticeable to the Eagles' front office when in the very next year the Colts bobbed up with Alan Ameche, who so well WOBT Mutual 1240K.C.

With Ameche of Wisconsin came a remarkable passing field marshal, George Shaw of Of gon. This pair put Baltimore in pro football for keeps.

As for offensive tackles, in this league they must weigh something like 240 pounds and be able to move. It's like the minors and majors in baseball. Up here, they are bigger and hit harder and the pitching Is considerably more deceptive. Schoendienst Hurls Challenge to Cards MILWAUKEE Schoendienst, a former St. (Louis Cardinal now with the New York Giants, offered Wednesday to round up a team of ex-Cards traded or sold by General Manager Frank Lane and play the present St.

Louis team an exhibition game. "There is only one stipulation," the red-haired second baseman said, "Lane himself must take over as manager of the St. Louis team." Schoendienst, who has made no secret of his antipathy toward Lane, said the proceeds of the game could be donated to the St. Louis Community Chest. He offered the challenge as the Giants conclude a three game series with the Milwaukee Braves.

Schoendienst was one of the Cardinals traded away since Lane, baseball's busiest barterer, took over at St. Louis last winter. Here's the team he suggested: Joe Frazier (Baltimore) at first, himself at second, Alex Grammas (Cincinnati) at short, and Solly Hemus (Philadelphia) at third. Bill Sarni (Giants) catching, and Bill Virdon (Pittsburgh), Jackie Brandt (Giants) and Pe-te Whisenant (Cubs) in the outfield. He named his pitchers as Brooks Lawrence (Cincinnati).

Harvey Haddix. Stu Millev and Ben Flowers (Philadelphia) and Dick Littlefield (Giants). "Maybe Lane is the shrewd trader everybody claims he said." Red said. "Here's his chance to prove it." Then he added: "1 really don'-t expect anything to come of this." But "we won't even need a manager to beat Lane's team."
