Bob Michals NEW YORK (AP) -Mike Wallace says he'll "begin to back off." Mor-ley Safer feels "very lucky." Harry Reasoner sweats over the writing. And the producer of CBS' 60 Minutes blasts the show's critics in interviews with Playboy magazine. Correspondents Ed Bradley and Diane Sawyer also discuss the highly rated news program in the magazine's March issue. Wallace, who has signed a new contract with the network for a reported $1 million, told Playboy he is "getting a little older and (I) don't travel the way I used to." "What will happen, and has been happening," he adds, "is that I will begin to back off. That's one of the reasons Sawyer is aboard." Mike Wallace told 'Playboy' he 'will begin to back off.

That's one of the reasons (Diane) Sawyer is Ms. Sawyer replied that Wallace 'can't leave. Sawyer, who joined the program last year, said Wallace, "can't leave. I'm going to have my teeth in his ankles to prevent him from going out the door." Don Hewitt, executive producer and creator of the show that went on the air in 1968, defended 60 Minutes against charges that it has practiced "ambush journalism" and relies more on entertainment than on news. "Viewers didn't buy the set to be informed; they bought the set to be entertained to look at Dallas. Right? If you get them to look at us, you're ahead," he said. He said "ambush journalism" is a term "print reporters have invented to describe something that they themselves have done since the penny press.

Reporters have always walked up to people unannounced, unawares, trying to catch them off guard. The only difference is that when they did it, nobody saw it. When we do it, people see it." Safer, calling his life "very lucky," said television news does "a better job and a much more accurate job than any newspaper in the country. We check our facts more carefully." Reasoner said he dislikes the pro- cess of writing his reports for 60 Minutes, saying, "you have to do it alone and you think a drink would help, so it won't, so you can't I like to contemplate writing, and I like having done it. It's the actual process that bothers me." Of the show's controversial interviews, Bradley said most are done by the other correspondents.

He said he prefers "compassionate listening" in an interview, "better than going, 'Aha! I see here by this document that you said in 1957 In other comments to Playboy: Wallace, who is a defendant in retired Gen. William Westmoreland's libel suit over a CBS Reports broadcast on Vietnam war enemy troop figures, said the network's stringent checking procedures may not have been fully in operation when the documentary was made. "But the real guideline is fairness. I believe the broadcast was fair," he said. Ms.

Sawyer, who worked for former President Richard Nixon for eight years, said a tough interview she had with him for CBS "finally closed the chapter." For the week ending Jan.

27, CBS had a 17.2 rating. ABC, with No. 3 Dynasty and No. 7 Webster as its top shows, averaged a 17.1, while NBC, led by No. 4 TVie A-Team and No.

5 The Cosby Show, had a 16.8, according to figures released Tuesday by the A.C. Nielsen Co. The weekly ratings showed ABC and NBC performing higher than their seasonal averages, with CBS doing about the same as usual. After 18 weeks of the 30-week prime-time season, CBS has a 17.2 rating, NBC a 16.2 and ABC a 15.5. The last time a regular season, prime-time week was as close was in December 1977.

The three networks also were separated by four-tenths of a point last June, but that was during off-peak viewing when prime-time programming was dominated by the Democratic National Convention and reruns. CBS, ABC and NBC were so tightly bunched last week that they all had the same audience share a 26. (A share measures the average percentage of viewers with their sets tuned to a network.) The week featured the beginning of the Robert Kennedy miniseries on CBS, the introduction of several new series and an unusual three-hour movie on CBS on Monday that preempted the network's regular series and affected the normal viewing patterns for the night. Part one of Robert Kennedy and His Times ranked 17th, a respectable showing, and its 29 share of the audience Sunday night was about what CBS expected. "But that was still below average for us on a Sunday night," said Michael Eisenberg, CBS' director of audience measurement.

NBC's two-hour movie introducing its new series, Code Name: Foxfire, was the top-rated program Sunday night, finishing 14th. The series, about an undercover team specializing in jobs that "even a man can't handle," now moves to Friday at 8 o'clock EST, hoping to attract women eagerly waiting for Dallas on CBS at 9. Dallas and Dynasty are tied for the season's No. 1 show, each averaging a 25.4 rating.
