Tie Good Legs, Arms Attract the Scouts By BOB BLOODWORTH Post Sports Writer Major league scouts and girl watchers have one thing in common they keep their eyes on legs. i dry i 1 1 srr I Mm I fij Many of the scouts are attending the World Amateur Baseball Tournament in Santo Domingo but are expected to be here for the Region 3 meet. "I know some scouts who don't work in this territory who'll come down because they are from the same area as some of the clubs," says Macon. "This should be an outstanding tournament. I know every state will have a good club.

The College Park, team has some outstanding players." Macon feels American Legion baseball is a better brand of baseball than that played in most high schools. "Legion is better simply because a Legion team can pick up the better players off the high school teams," says the Pirates talent hunter. "I wouldn't say there is better coaching in Legion baseball than in high school, but I think it compares favorably with high school baseball." Smn Pros From Page 4 "Your whole body just gets exhausted," says Holmes. "Your arms, legs your whole body aches after pitch- ing seven or nine innings. I don't think it has any perma- nent effect on your arm," he says.

The southpaw attributes his fast ball "and a lot of luck" to his amazing success on the diamond this season. While Holmes was assured of a college education even if he signed a professional tract, shortstop Adeimy feels his offer from the Oakland Athletics was inadequate. "They found out I was going to college, anyway, and they drafted me real low," confesses es Adeimy. "Their offer wasn't too good, either." The St. Louis Cardinals con-: tacted Adeimy before the mail jor league draft and made him an offer "which was real good, gi They were going to send me to college, but I think my dad just told everybody I was ing to college.

I guess Oakland ust took a chance, he adds. Adeimy hit a torrid .428 in high school this year, but ed off to .225 in the Legion season. "My timing was off," ex-8 plains the usually sure-fielding shortstop. "I was hitting some good line drives. They just weren't falling in at all." But they don't look for quite the same thing.

Nor do they look at the same types of legs. Max Macon, a West Palm Beach resident and a scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates, always looks at a prospective major leaguer's legs first. "We look mostly for good legs and arms," says Macon, who will be one of more than 20 major league baseball scouts attending the Region 3 American Legion Baseball Tournament at Municipal Stadium, Aug. 20-25. "Those are the two basic things," explains Macon.

"A boy's got to be able to run and throw. Those are God-given qualities. We feel like we can teach a boy to field or hit, but running or throwing has to be born in them." This theory applies to outfielders and infi elders, but pitchers and catchers "don't have to be speed merchants," says Macon. The Pirates scout recently 'returned from the Georgia State Legion Tournament in Griffin, where only eight scouts turned out. "Most of them were down in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic," explained Macon, "but a lot of them told me they will come back from Santo Domingo to attend the tournament in West Palm Beach."
