WGN Getd Tiau WOR A T. 6l30 Just a few short years ago, a sizable portion of the TV industry was predicting "pay-per-view" woulu revolutionize the medium. Their sales pitch heralded a time in the not-too-distant future when viewers could order live sporting events, Broadway shows and even musical concerts from around the world all for a modest charge that would be delivered to their door via addressable decoder boxes hooked to their sets.

The gold rush never materialized. Subscription television, particularly in South Florida, has never engendered more than modest interest and within a couple of months it's going to die a quiet death. ONTV, the Hollywood-based subscription service, has announced it probably will be ceasing operation sometime in November. Jim Septer, ONTV general manager, explains: "We're an over-the-air signal operating through WKID (Channel 51) and it looks like that station is going to be sold within a few months. Oak Industries, which currently owns Channel 51, and the John Blair which is planning to purchase it, have both petitioned the FCC for a license transfer.

Assuming the FCC approves the transfer, the owership transaction will be finalized, and we're figuring that will happen around November, perhaps a little later. "The new owners have already announced their intention to operate Channel 51 strictly as a commercial Spanish language station and we'll no longer have access for our signal. Apparently the new owners feel a Spanish station could be more profitable in this marketplace Uian subscription television." If you go strictly by ONTV's track record in South Florida, it's a point that's tough to dispute. ONTV currently claims between 25,000 and 26,000 subscribers. To date, the only pay-per-view events that have drawn a sizable portion of those homes on anything resembling a reliable basis have been big-name prize fights.

"Over the last few years, we've tried everything from Broadway plays (Sophisticated Ladies) to first-run feature films (Pirates of Penzance) to blockbuster motion pictures like Star Wars. Recently, we even tried 'adults only' movies, and the only thing that has consistently done well is boxing. Unfortunately, there was only one Sugar Ray Leonard." Even though Star Wars did reasonably well in subscription markets around the country, Septer feels that movies have to be real blockbusters of the E. T. or Indiana Jones mold before they can even hope to do well on a pay-per-view basis.

"Most people seem perfectly content to wait until the films come to cable television and it takes some- AFTERNOONi 4:00 GDQwrisi. Times are tough all around regardless of the delivery system. All the cable companies are now finding out this industry is no bed of roses and subscription television certainly hasn't fared much better.

I guess we all came to this business with a pie in the sky approach that just hasn't panned out." So, despite all the promises and well-intentioned plans, when ONTV becomes OFFTV in South Florida later this fall, some 25,000 subscribers literally are going to be left holding the box. Septer says his company has yet to come up with a plan for how it plans to reclaim all those decoder boxes which are worth about S50 apiece, but it's unlikely the firm will write them off. Changing channels Cable subscribers in the Palm Beach Gardens system of Perry Cable will be receiv- ing Channel 42 (WHRS) on cable Channel 6 instead of Channel 12, effective Sept. 30. Because it's a local station, Channel 42's signal is protected under the FCC's "must carry" rules and WHRS requested the channel change for two reasons: First, the current reception on Channel 12 is unsatisfactory due to interference caused by WPEC's strong over-the-air signal on Channel 12; and secondly, WHRS will expand its schedule to begin broadcasting at noon as of Sept.

30. Perry subscribers in the Palm Beach Gardens system now receiving Home Box Office on Channel 6 will have to add a converter (at additional charge) which will allow them to continue receiving HBO on Channel 26. This converter also delivers 12 satellite services for news, sports, weather and music. For additional information, con- tact Perry Cable at 627-6500. ABC's highest-placed program for the week ending Sunday was a repeat of the movie thriller Coma, which was third. Second place went to the second part of NBC's repeat of the mini-series.

Since the end of the regular season in April, which CBS won, ABC has been first 12 times and tied for first once. Call to Glory, which has just been added to the network's fall schedule, was tied for 11th place with CBS's AMe Hammer and NBC's Cheers. Here are the week's 20 top shows: i.
