"There's been close coordination between the county engineer's office, my office and the acting director. Once we get the (expansion) project manager aboard and the critical decisions have been made, then we'll advertise the position." Sansbury said finding a new director could be difficult because of the county's experience with airport directors. In a related matter, the commissioners decided to continue their contract with Aviation Planning Inc. The consultants are helping airport officials negotiate leases with fixed-base operators. Commission Chairman Ken Adams said the consultants' expertise is critical to negotiations of an estimated $1 billion in leases and contracts at the airport.

In other business, the commission: Approved the purchase of an energy-saving light sensor for the Governmental Center at a cost of $131,967. The system is expected to cut energy used for lighting by 57 percent and pay for itself in savings in about two years. Agreed to review the county's enforcement of laws requiring construction contractors to have permits and licenses. Allocated $887,049 to cover the county's share of costs related to the expansion of the regional waste treatment plant. By Gary Kane Staff Wrlt.r Palm Beach County commissioners yesterday agreed to open the search for a new director for Palm Beach International Airport after discovering the job had been placed in a holding pattern.

Assistant County Administrator Bruce Pelly has supervised airport operations since June when John van Wezel quit as director. No effort has been made to hire a director since van Wezel's resignation. Commissioner Ken Spillias questioned the decision to leave the airport director' position vacant, parti-culary in light of the critical airport issues facing the county. Such issues include the planned $188 million airport expansion, the negotiation of leases with fixed base operators and the enactment of noise controls, he said. Spillias praised Pelly's performance as acting director of the airport, but said the assistant county administrator is dividing his attention among several responsibilities.

"It takes an airport person," he said. "We're not talking about running a drugstore or a county department. We're talking about the development of a major airport." Pelly has expressed interest in applying for the position. County Administrator John Salisbury said there were no plans to seek applications for an airport director until the expansion is under way. Riviera Beach Fire Rescue's role was to provide advanced life support for a swimmer who supposedly was unconscious. The Coast Guard's role in the rescue of a diver who supposedly had the bends a condition caused when a diver ascends to the surface too quickly was to hoist him up by way of a line with a basket attached from a Coast Guard cutter below. In such a case, the helicopter would then transport the victim to a recompression chamber. In conjunction with the rescue of the diver, lifeguards used the Beach Patrol's new rigid-hull, inflatable rescue boatequipped with a 40-horse-power engine. The recently purchased boat is stationed near the Jupiter Inlet and will be used for rescues involving capsized boats, Herrick said.

we are stronger than ever! When you've built fj your business by "treating the customer how you would like to be treated." By Lisa Ocker Staff Writtr RIVIERA BEACH Using equipment ranging from ropes and surfboards to a Coast Guard helicopter, the Palm Beach County Beach Patrol rescued four swimmers and a diver off Singer Island yesterday. Parks and recreation specialists from around the state as well as some astounded beachgoers calmly watched as lifeguards executed the rescues without a hitch. That was the way it was supposed to happen. The event actually was a demonstration as part of the annual conference being held here this week by the Florida Institute of Park Personnel. And the "victims," actually other lifeguards, were in no danger.

In addition to showing off "state-of-the-art" techniques, the demonstration gave Palm Beach County Beach Patrol members a chance to practice working with other agencies, said Jon Herrick, aquatic supervisor with Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation.
