B6 Wednesday, August 30,1995 The Salina Journal BIG EIGHT FOOTBALL NCAA cleare NU's Phillips to play Huskers, O-State open Thursday By Associated Press OMAHA, Neb. Nebraska running back Lawrence Phillips can play Thursday against Oklahoma State and in other games even though an NCAA investigation is continuing, the NCAA's director of eligibility said Tuesday. Carrie Doyle said the NCAA has determined that Phillips' lunch with an employee of California sports agent Steve Feldman will not affect his eligibility. The NCAA tinued to investi- Philhps a two other is sues involving Phillips, Doyle said. One involves the 1995 Mustang convertible that Phillips has been driving.

Doyle would not identify the other issue, but the university has provided the NCAA with information about Phillips' status as a ward of the state of California. "He can play until the institution and legislative services determines that there are violations," Doyle said. Asked if Nebraska risked forfeiture of games in which Phillips played if violations are found, Doyle said: "No. As long as the institution acts in good faith to develop, the information, it doesn't seem to me that they will be held responsible." Coach Tom Osborne said the clearance was good news. "We understand there is still some concern by the NCAA regarding his relationship and the support he has received from those who ran Notes from the Kansas State football camp: DEPTH CHART: Tuesday's updated depth chart includes four newcomers, including true freshman punter James Garcia.

Other first-year players on the two-deep roster include Smith Center freshman Mark Simoneau (linebacker), junior college transfers Thad Swazer (defensive end) and Jabbar Williams (linebacker). Dodge City freshman Brian Goolsby is also in the running for the No. 2 spot at fullback. "Some of the young guys have really jumped up," head coach Bill Snyder said. "Goolsby has come into his own; Simoneau has done exactly what we thought he would and (El Dorado walk- on) Brandon Knowles could be the No.

1 long-snapper." SCHEDULES: When K-State and Temple knock heads Saturday in the season opener at Manhattan, it will bring together two teams at the different ends of the scheduling spectrum. While some preseason publications have picked K-State's non-conference schedule as the easiest in NCAA Division I-A, Temple's overall slate in ranked No. 2 in the country behind Michigan. In addition to road games at Kansas State, West Virginia, Penn Syra- cuse and Miami, the Owls have home games against Pittsburgh, Boston College and Virginia Tech. REUNION: Approximately 70 former K-State players are expected to attend a 1970s football reunion this weekend in Manhattan as part of the season opener against Temple.

The former players from the 1970s will gather to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1970 finished second in the Big Eight race behind national champion Nebraska. SEASON TICKETS: As of last Friday, K-State had sold a school record 23,036 season tickets, which surpasses the old mark of 21,613 set back in 1970. The ticket office has sold 15,233 public season tickets and 7,803 student tickets. GAME SWITCHED: Saturday's game was originally scheduled to be played at Temple, but K-State's officials waved enough money at the Owls to get them to switch to KSU Stadium. "I think it's really an advantage for both teams," Snyder said.

"It puts additional monies in their program and ours. It's a good business decision for both schools." By Harold Bechard the group home in California, where Lawrence resided from age 13," Osborne said in a statement. Phillips, a junior, is considered a Heisman Trophy contender. Phillips has said that Jack Verner, a recruiter for Feldman, had contacted him. Verner gave Phillips a ride to a Lincoln restaurant and paid for the meal last November, both of which were potential NCAA violations.

Nebraska officials reported the lunch to the NCAA, which had con- tacted the school after learning that a Feldman employee had been in Lincoln. University officials have said Phillips repaid Verner approximately $20 for his portion of the meal. Since the money was repaid, Doyle said, the incident was considered minor. OSBORNE DEFENDS PLAYERS: Nebraska coach Tom Osborne on Tuesday defended his decision to keep Riley Washington and Abdul Muhammad around the football pro- gram after both were linked by police to a shooting. Washington, a junior wingback from Chula Vista, has been practicing with the national champions.

He is free on $100,000 bail after being charged with attempted second-degree murder for the Aug. 2 shooting of a Lincoln man. He has said he is innocent. Muhammad, a Husker wingback through last season, is an undergraduate assistant coach with the team. Police said the Compton, native was with Washington the night of the shooting.

Osborne said his association with both men makes him better qualified to judge whether they should be around the team. "I've heard comments about gang members, in regard to Riley and in regard to Abdul Muhammad," Osborne said. "What is a gang member? To me, gang members are people who get in trouble, people who quite often carry weapons. If you talk to every player on our team, (they would) say neither's ever been known to carry a gun." JENKINS ENDS FIGHT: At Jefferson, City, an attorney for Missouri wide receiver Rahsetnu Jenkins on Tuesday dropped an effort to fight his suspension from the team pending the outcome of his rape case. Jenkins, 21, is accused of raping a 24-year-old woman at her home in Columbia July 13.

He is free on $25,000 bond. Last week, a Cole County judge granted a temporary restraining order that blocked the university's policy of suspending athletes accused of a felony. A hearing on a permanent injunction was scheduled for Tuesday, but one of Jenkins' attorneys, C. Hendricks, requested the matter be dropped.
