His promising career as a U.S. Navy pilot was to begin the same day.

But his T-34C training plane collided with another plane. The 22-year-old son of a Boynton Beach couple and his flight instructor were killed in the fiery wreck. "I was Navy," his father Donald Rowe Sr. said yesterday after his son's military funeral at St. Vincent Ferrer Church in Delray Beach.

"He always wanted to do everything I did. I was a submarine sailor. That's the one thing he tried and didn't like. So he decided to be a pilot." Rowe's coffin, draped with the American flag, was saluted with 21 guns at Palm Beach Memorial Park yesterday. Taps echoed across the cemetery.

"I spoke with him a week ago last Saturday," said Donald a cable repairman for Southern Bell. "He always called. He never missed a Saturday night in five years. We always waited for his call. He was a loving son.

"We talked about flying. We always talked about the things he did. That's all that was on his mind. The (flight training) course was so difficult. He didn't have time for much else.

He had to study 4Vi hours a day." A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Rowe graduated from the University of Mississippi May 16, 1982, with a bachelor's degree in marine biology. He entered the Navy the next day. "I had all my pictures taken from all over the world," said Donald who was in the Navy from 1952-1956. "He naturally took a liking to it. He loved the Navy.

He was going to make a career of it." Rowe had been flying since September, much to the dismay of his parents. "He was never frightened of anything," Donald Sr. said. "That was his biggest problem.

He was never afraid of anything since he was a baby. We were always afraid that he would do something he couldn't handle "I didn't like him being a pilot too much. His mother didn't like it at all. We tried to learn to live with it. We always tried to encourage him to do whatever he wanted to do." Rowe was doing well, Lt.

Max Graeber of the Pensacola Naval Air Base said. The T-34C is regarded as a safe plane, but the nine-month training program is very intense, Graeber said. "If he was up in a (final training flight) he must have been doing very well," Graeber said. "To get that far you have to have something on the ball. You have to be a pretty special person.

It's a very demanding program." The details of Rowe's crash are unknown. Graeber said it will be at least three months before the cause is determined. Rowe and his instructor Lt. Melvin Buflod, 28, of Milton, collided with another T-34C above Saufley Air Field near the Florida-Alabama border. LEASE PLUS TAG TAX fift NU DUWN PAYMENT if US INTEREST ANNUAL PERCENTAGE RATE ON ALL NEW TRUCKS By Nancy Powell Staff Writtr LAKE WORTH Two businesses with traditions spanning almost half a century Schuettlers Grocery Store and the Lauriston Dry Goods Store are yielding to changing times and closing, one for good and one for a long vacation. Harvey and Margaret Schuettler have worked together in the family-owned grocery store at 701 Lucerne Ave. for 46 years. Each day Harvey puts on a white apron, goes behind the meat counter and checks the supply of fresh meats. Margaret ties an apron around her waist, looks over the produce bins, checks the shelves and makes sure the cash register has a tape.

But the routine will change May 27, when Schuettlers Grocery Store will close while the couple takes an "extended" vacation. "I think it's time to quit after all these years," 69-year old Schuettler said. He said he wants to go fishing. "But we aren't closing the store," said his wife, whose father started the business in 1933. "We're just phasing it out," she said.

"We intend to be back in November on a limited basis. We'll probably take orders for fruit because we have many customers who want it." A block and a half from the grocery store, at 512 Lake Katherine (Katie) Slack is closing her business, the Lauriston Dry Goods Store. She has not set a date for closing, but expects it to take a month or two. "I'll be 80 in June and I think it's time to retire," she said. "After all I've been working for 63 years and I think that's long enough.

I'm tired, and I'm ready to let someone else do it." Miss Slack walks to the store every day from her home on North Street. The construction on Lake and Lucerne created obstacles for her. "I felt it since last September when they started working in front of my house," she said. "Don't misunderstand me, it has to be done. But when I walked to the store I felt like I was pulling a wagon up and down a hill (to circumvent piles of dirt and construction work).
