Vandy won three in a row for the first time since 1984 while Maryland finished with its first losing season since 1981. Jones, who completed 16-of-25 pass attempts for 225 yards, gave Vandy the lead for good at 10-7 with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Parker with 1:37 left in the second quarter. The Jones-to-Parker combination struck again eight seconds into the fourth quarter with a 15-yard scoring play that boosted the Commodores into a 31-14 lead. Ending a four-game losing streak in the season-ending series won for only the third time in the last 10 years against the Rebels. Underwood, who came in midway through the first quarter, threw touchdown pssses of 54 yards to Jesse Anderson and 9 yards to Albert Williams as Mississippi State built a 14-13 halftime lead. Memphis State scored on its first two possessions of the game, with a 3-yard run by Tracy Holmes at 6:43 in the first quarter and Pryor's 13-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tim Jones about four minutes later.

Pryor carried 21 times for 115 yards from the Tigers, while Holmes carried 15 times for 82 yards. Virginia Tech 21, Cincinnati 20 BLACKSBURG, Va. Freshman Jon Jeffries rushed for 160 yards and two touchdowns as the Hokies (2-9) held on to defeat the Bearcats (4-7). Cincinnati rallied during a 20-point fourth period, as junior running back Al McKinney ran for scores of 1 and 2 yards, and senior Danny McCoin hit junior wide receiver Roosevelt Mukes with an 18-yard touchdown pass. The Bearcats were left one point behind when McCoin was unable to complete a conversion pass to junior wide receiver Bill Davis.

Jeffries, a freshman tailback, carried the football 24 times and scored on carries of 3 and 42 yards. Georgia Southern, ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division I-AA, led 9-0 at halftime after Foley kicked field goals of 27, 37 and 29 yards. Gerald Todd rushed for 100 yards to lead Abilene Christian (5-6, 2-3) to a 27-17 victory over West Texas State (5-6, 2-3) at Canyon, Texas, in a Lone Star Conference game at Canyon, Texas Luther Turner rushed for 175 yards and scored two touchdowns, including one with 46 seconds left, as Sam Houston State (8-3, 5-1) defeated Southwest Texas State (4-7, 2-4) 24-21 in a Southland Conference game at San Marcos, Texas. Senior wide receiver Winfred Essix caught 10 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns to lead East Texas State (2-9) to a 43-22 win over Central State of Oklahoma (2-8) at Commerce, Texas. Higgs went off right tackle on the first two plays and tried dives over the middle on the last two. But on his final attempt, with 1:59 left, he was inches from the goal line. "I don't know what to say," Higgs said. "I got hit. I really couldn't get up in air.

Somebody got one of my legs (on the last try)." It was Tennessee middle guard Mike Whitehead that stopped Higgs in mid-air on a dive over the middle. "We were expecting them to run outside," he said. "We knew we had to buckle down and stop them. We were fired up." Tennessee linebacker Keith De-Long said the Volunteers weren't surprised that Kentucky tried to go over the middle. "Ninety percent of me said they'd run it," he said.

"Ten percent said they might bootleg it. You got to honor their run their line was down and looked like they were coming hard." Higgs added, "It was a call. It wasn't a bad play." Freshman quarterback Bobby Fuller threw two touchdown passes and the Mountaineers' (9-2, 7-0) defense turned three punt attempts into scores in a Southern Conference victory over the Catamounts (4-7, 2-5). Fuller threw scoring passes of 6 and 18 yards to Glades Central High School graduate Wardell Jefferson in a 19-point second quarter. The Mountaineers blocked a punt through the end zone and Bjorn Nittmo kicked a 46-yard field goal. Furman 58, The Citadel 13 CHARLESTON, C. Sophomore running back Dwight Sterling ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns as the Paladins (7-4, 4-3) beat the Bulldogs (4-7, 1-5) in a Southern Conference game.

Sterling scored on a 38-yard run with 3:48 remaining in the first quarter and the Paladins added another long touchdown on the last play of the period when fullback Kennet Goldsmith ran in from 32 yards out. Fullback Steve Col well rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns as the Moccasins (6-5, 4-3) beat the Keydets (4-7, 2-5) in a Southern Conference game. The Moccasins defense had 10 sacks, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions. The Keydets fumbled on their first play from scrimmage, setting up Colwell's first score.

Colwell, who gained 100 yards in the first half, ran 33 yards on fourth down early in the second quarter for another score..
