Latest Retail Store Features Started In One Room -1921 Office Employees Two attractive young ladies you don't often see on the "selling floor" — because they are busily engaged in office work at the S&L Store. They invite you just the same! The S&L Company had its beginning in, Elkton, South Dakota, in 1921, as a smaH, one- room- store, -launched by Samuel Salkin and the late 'Joseph Lin- pff. Headquarters for S & L. are in Minneapolis. The. Home Office which was designed for the operation of a group of retail stores and completed in 1951. S & L Project Gives Store 528 Sq. Ft. Extra Space Big Merchandise And Prize Offerings Planned Store Manager Says 'We're Ready' ARTIST'S SKETCH OF NEWEST ALGONA STORE FRONT lights, spaced 12 The general contract for the S base display & L Store modernization program inches apart, here — now completed — was executed by the H. J. Cowan Construction Co. of Algona which now has a special division set up for store front modernization. The Cowan firm also in the recent E ast completed the Chrischilles tore new front project. Other local firms engaged in the S&L program were Algona Electric Co. (electrical installations); Reliable Decorators (painting and decorating), Russ' Floor Service (floor laying). Muckey Plumbing & Heating performed necessary re-arrangement of such facilities, necessary to the project. New Store Front The new S&L store front presents a complete new appearance from the street side. The old, outmoded "sidewalk lobby" has been replaced with longer display windows and a modern look-through store entrance. The doors are Pittcho tubelite aluminum framed glass, 'while the bulkheads of the store front are of Opalite panels. The new display windows are four feet deep, allowing for more effective merchandise display. These windows have swivel The exterior store sign features large letters cut from two- inch Ponderosa Pine treated for exterior use, and finished in bright red. This fact will be instantly apparent to Grand Opening visitors to the S & L Store in Algona, beginning Friday, May 31. Enlarged Interior Space Inside the store further modernization has taken place. In addition to the 528 square feet of extra selling space installed, a complete redecorating program has resulted in a much different, airier and lighter appearance. Decorating has been done in colors chosen especially to lend this atmosphere, with the store ceiling, in white, walls in Dawn-Glow Rose. Wall cases and shelves are in white, with baffle-board trim in soft Lancaster .Green. Vizusell fixture equipment has been installed in the new addition. The floor is done over in alternating tan and brown asphalt tile. She came to the store in April, 1943, as an extra and in October of that year, started to work full-time.. She has spent the last 14 years with S & L here, and now as head of Ready-To-Wear would like to extend her personal invitation to all her friends to come and visit the "new" S&L. JEAN CAPESIUS Visitors to the newly-remod- j eled S^.-L Store in Algona, ""o~n ,,the "occasipn of, the firm's Grand Opening, will instantly notice the contrast between the "old" and the "new", primarily because of the vastly increased floor space. A casual view taken from the store's balcony towar4 the front entrance, gives an inkling of this increased spaciousness. According to Frank Riley, store manager, the objective of the remodeling program was to create a feeling and .atmosphere of greater light, more airiness, and more actual selling space, which would permit the introduction . of more stock thah in the past. The project actually has increased floor space by 528 square feet — a fact instantly seen on coming through the front entrance. A modernized display window set-up, and elimination of the outmoded old "entrance way" were two parts of the project that contributed to greater space. Grand Opening visitors this Friday and Saturday, and all next week, will have ample opportunity to view at firsthand the results of the S&L Store modernizing project. With the doors scheduled for opening at 10:00 A.M. Friday — the day after Memorial Day. — the finishing touches are being placed on t h e S & L Store's Grand Opening celebration program. According to Frank Riley, personable S&L Store manager, everything will be in complete readiness, right down to the colorful balloons and candy the store will have on hand for the kiddies. Last Minute Touches "We'll be ready", said Riley, "but I'm not planning any fishing trip for Memorial Day this year. A few of us will probably find it necessary to spend on hour or so on the holiday making those last- minute preparations for the Friday morning opening." An important fact noted by Riley in connection with the new ly-remodeled S&L Store here is the greatly enlarged merchandise stock, now permitted by enlargement of floor space, etc. As.a consequence, he reports that Grand Opening visitors will be greeeted by enlarged assortments in all departments. Big Celebration "We're going all-out to show FRANK RILEY the good folk of our area just how much we appreciate their friend- shop, too" stated Mr Riley. In addition to many, many special merchandise offerings arranged for this event, we're going to make it a big, happy celebration with lots of gifts and prizes — • plenty for all .eight days of the Grand Opening. S&L appreciates greatly the patronage that has come over the years, and we're going to show our appreciation!" Our Congratulations! to the management of S & L for bringing a notable contribution to our community's growth and progress . . . and our compliments on the fine appearance of their completed project. As a utility, our records show a> steady growth in this area, and it is such projects as the S & L modernization which help maintain the pride and confidence we have in our community. We had a mighty lot of ground to cover — with paint, that is — in redecorating the S&L Store. We had a full crew — and then some — on the job , . , and even then it took some midnight hours io get it all completed in time for the Grand Opening. We're proud of it now ... for as you will notice the store is very light and bright — and everything looks slick as a whistle 1 We'll drop by for the Grand Opening — without our paint brushes 1 RELIABLE DECORATORS PHONE CY 4-3393 ALGONA, IOWA Floor Tile Laying By Russ Floor Service It was our privilege to lay a new floor patterned in blocks of four 9x9 inch squares of alternating tan and brown asphalt tile ovir the existing main floor of the S&L Store . . . and we respectfully call your attention to this portion of the modernization project.
