Red Sox catcher Paul Williams ended that string as he hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Expos pitcher David Wainhouse.

Williams hit another two-run homer off of Wainhouse in the sixth inning to lead Winter Haven (5-12) to a 5-0 victory over West Palm Beach (8-10). It was the first time in Williams' professional career that he hit two home runs in a game. "I may have had one back in Little League," he said, "but never here." "He's a big boy," Expos manager Felipe Alou said of Williams, a 6-foot-1, 217-pounder who entered the game with four home runs and a .219 average. "But the way we've been playing lately, it didn't surprise me," Alou added. "We were flat." The Expos had only four hits singles in the first four innings off Winter Haven starter Ken Ryan (3-4), then were allowed only one walk by reliever Paul Brown in the last three innings.

Brown struck out four of the 10 batters he faced, while Ryan struck out five and walked three in six innings. "We're dead out there, and not much entertainment," Alou said. "We do extra work and add in some extra things for enthusiasm, but we've still been like this for a long time now." The suffering began for the Expos when Winter Haven's Jim Byrd doubled in the first inning with one out and Williams followed with his first home run. "That was important because we've been struggling a little bit," Williams said of the Red Sox's quick start. "We knew sooner or later something had to give.

Everything can't last bad." Winter Haven took a 3-0 lead when leadoff hitter Chris Whitehead hit a one-out homer off Wainhouse (1-5) in the third, then took a 5-0 lead in the sixth when Byrd singled and scored on Williams' second homer of the game. The closest the Expos came to scoring was when Ryan walked Jim Faulk with one out in the sixth. After a fly out, Ryan walked Will Cordero to put runners at first and second. Tyrone Kingwood, in his first game back after being on the suspended list for three weeks; struck out to end the threat. "(Pitchers) Kenny and Paul were mixing it up real good," Williams said.

Lucie County Sports Complex. Miller (9-4) walked one and struck out seven. He gave up a double, triple and another double to start the sixth, but escaped further damage by relying less on his fastball and more on off-speed pitches.
