S&L Sportswear For Ladies &Girls New S & L Accessories Dept NEWLY - REMODELED aummer " me moihers calls for lots and lots of casual sportswear ... and S & L's balcony and got of ALGONA I O" W A section **"* y ° U """ itttl '* Y ° Ur tiahl ihe ni ' • • * S & I Modernization Presents Latest Retail Store Features At 10:00 A. M started in one Room -1921 Big Merchandise And Office Employees Two attractive young ladies you don't often see on the "selling floor" — because they are busily engaged in office work at the S & L Store. They invite you just the same ! The S & L Company had its beginning in Elkton, South Dakota, in 1921, as a small, one- rooin store, launched by Samuel Salkin and the late Joseph Linoff. Headquarters for S & L are in Minneapolis. The .Home Office is located in a new building which was designed for the operation of a group of retail stores and completed in 1951. S & L maintains it's own buying offices in New York City and Los Angeles and is affiliated with buying agencies in St. Louis, Chicago, London, and Florence, Italy. Prize Offerings Pinned S & L Project Gives Store 528 Sq. Ft. Extra Space ARTIST'S SKETCH OF NEWEST ALGONA STORE FRONT The general contract for the S & L Store modernization program here — now completed — was executed by the H. J. Cowan Construction Co. of Algona which now has a special division set up for store front modernization. The Cowan firm also in the recent § ast completed the Chrischilles tore new front project. Other local firms engaged in the S & L program were Algona Electric Co. (electrical installations); Reliable Decorators (painting and decorating), Russ' Floor Service (floor laying). Muckey Plumbing & Heating performed necessary re-arrangement of such facilities, necessary to the project. New Store Front The new S & L store front presents a complete new appearance from the street side. The old, outmoded "sidewalk lobby" has been replaced with longer display windows and a modern look-through store entrance. The doors are Pittcho tubelite aluminum framed glass, while the bulkheads of the store front are of Opalite panels. The new display windows arc four feet deep, allowing for more effective merchandise display. These windows have swivel base display lights, spaced 12 inches apart. The exterior store sign features largo letters cut from two- inch Ponderosa Pine treated for exterior use, and finished in bright red. The letters "S & L" are 36 inches high, and the word "Stores" has letters 20 inches high. Enlarged Interior Space Inside the store further modernization has taken place. In addition to the 528 square feet of extra selling space installed, a . complete redecorating program has resulted in a much different, airier and lighter appearance. Decorating has been done in colors chosen especially to lend this atmosphere, with the store ceiling in white, walls in Dawn-Glow Rose. Wall cases and shelves are in white, with baffle-board trim in soft Lancaster Green. Vizusell fixture equipment has been installed in the new addition. The floor is done over in alternating tan arid brown asphalt tile. The addition of vastly more soiling space, through the modernization project, enables S & L to offer wider selections of mer- chandise, presented in a more effective and pleasing manner. This fact will be instantly apparent to Grand Opening visitors to the S & L Store in Algona, beginning Friday, May 31. " Oldest Employee" Not necessarily the oldest in point of age, but the employee with longest period of service at the Algona S & L Store is Mildred Putz, in Ready-To- Wear. She came to the store in April, 1943, as an extra and in October of that year, started to work full-time.. She has spent the last 14 years with S & L here, and now as head of Ready-To-Wear would like to extend her personal invitation to all her friends to come and visit the "new" S & L. SHERRY GARDNER Visitors to the newly-remodeled S „& L Store in Algona, on .the occasion, of the firm's Grand Opening, will instantly notice the contrast between the "old" and the "new", primarily because of the vastly increased floor space. A casual view taken from the store's balcony toward the front entrance, gives an inkling of this increased spaciousness. According to Frank Riley, store manager, the objective of the remodeling program was to create a feeling and .atmosphere of greater light, more airiness, and more actual selling space, which would permit the introduction of more stock than in the past. The project actually has increased floor space by 528 square feet — a fact' instantly seen on coming through the front entrance. A modernized display window set-up, and elimination of the outmoded old "entrance way" were two parts of the project that contributed to greater space. Grand Opening visitors this Friday and Saturday, and all next week, will have ample opportunity to view at firsthand the results of the S & L Store modernizing project. Store Manager Says 'We're Ready' With the doors scheduled for opening at 10:00 A.M. Friday — the day after Memorial Day the finishing touches are being placed on t h e S & L Store's Grand Opening celebration program. According to Frank Riley, personable S & L Store manager, everything will be in complete readiness, right'down to the colorful balloons and candy the store will have on hand for the kiddies. Last Minute Touches "We'll be ready", said Riley, but I m not planning any fishing trip for Memorial Day this year. A few of us will probably find it necessary to spend an hour or so on the holiday making those last- minute preparations for the Friday morning opening." An important fact noted by Riley in connection with the new ly-remodeled S & L Store here is the greatly enlarged merchandise stock, now permitted by enlargement of floor space, etc. As a consequence, he reports that Orand Opening visitors will be greeeted by enlarged assortments in all departments. Big Celebration "We're going all-out to show FRANK RILEY the good folk of our area just how much we appreciate their friend- shop, too" stated Mr Riley. In addition to many, many special merchandise offerings arranged, for this event, we're going to make it a big, happy celebration with lots of gifts and prizes .-** plenty for all eight days of the Grand Opening. S & L appreciate' es greatly the patronage that has come over the years, and we're going to show our appreciation!" *•*•"*•*• •*»«-'^»v.»**4««jng^ iji VJJCU L* - - *-» -—• •*••»-»» O W ***O VV "^ "***•'*'' U M*C1 IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIM^ | lll(l)lll IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIH WE Our Congratulations! to the management of S & L for bringing a notable contribution to our community's growth and progress . . . and our compliments pn the fine appearance of their completed project.
