Vision Quest Soundtrack I0W Actor's 'mask' a pain to wear u'f'j. i By Merle Ginsberg Rolling Stone Magazine ERIC STOLTZ UNMASKED: Eric Stoltz is quite good-looking underneath all the hot and heavy makeup he wore as Cher's disfigured son in Peter Bogdanovich's critically acclaimed new movie, "Mask." The 22-year-old actor went through hell playing the part of Rocky Dennis. The day he shot the fun-house scene, in which Rocky sees an almost normal reflection of himself in a distorted mirror, Stoltz sat through nine hours of makeup instead of the usual five. "I was in the chair for so long. Zoltan (makeup artist Zoltan Elek) is a genius.

All day long he would follow me around with his paintbrushes and his glue. Luckily, we got along well." Already thin, Stoltz had to shed 20 pounds "much to the concern of my mother" to guarantee his resemblance to the real Rocky. He's not complaining, however, and he admits playing Rocky matured him. "Everyone's felt ugly and different. Becoming a handicapped person physically and realizing how thoughtless and cruel humanity really is is very painful." How did he feel when he saw himself as Rocky Dennis? wept-'v ERIC AND PATTI BREAK UP TO MAKE UP: Right now he's her Forever Man but things have not always been that rosy between Eric Clapton and his missus, Patti, the former wife of George Harrison.

Clapton and the woman who inspired "Layla" have been together for some 10 years, but last November the London press reported that Patti and Eric had separated and that she had paired off with British fashion photographer Willie Christie. Then, in February, London paparazzi caught sight of Patti and Eric at a preview of Terry Gilliam's film "Brazil," where it was obvious they were as forever as they ever were. At least for the moment. PULL UP TO HER BUMPER: What's Grace Jones' favorite outfit? Evidently nothing. She's baring all in a summer issue of Playboy for old friend Helmut Newton.

He photographed Grace and her Swedish paramour, actor Dolph Lundgren, in a sleazy warehouse section of Hollywood where she stripped for a series of seduction scenes. In one, she runs naked through the streets. Luckily, the only spectators were bums. Grace isn't abandoning music she has a new song out in May called "Slave to the Rhythm," produced by Trevor Horn. FRITZ' KID: So what if she can't be the daughter of the president.

Eleanor Mondale's getting what she really wants a break in pictures. She's had small parts on network shows and in commercials. Now, in an HBO theatrical production, "Summer Jobs," she plays a politician's daughter. ERIC STOLTZ: The young actor had to spend hours sitting' while makeup artists put on his Stoltz portrayed the disfigured Rocky Dennis in the movie 51 A A .1 4 A A..
