Salina Journal Saturday, August 12,1995 C3 CONFERENCE School to do away with big-faced football mascot By The Associated Press LINCOLN, Neb. Nebraska's Herbie Husker has been sacked. The big-faced Cornhusker with the oversized, red cowboy hat and aw-shucks grin has been taken off the University of Nebraska's roster after 21 years as the team's official sports mascot. "It is true. He will not be on the field for football this fall," said Chris Anderson, Nebraska's sports information officer.

The corny Herbie no pun intended has not been a favorite with fans, especially out-of-state fans. With last year's national football title, some school officials felt it might be time for the state's most recognizable farm boy to be replaced with some- thing a bit more stylish. found that Cornhuskers and Herbie just don't sell of-Nebraska," Athletic Di- Bill Byrne said earlier this summer. He tooted at the time that fans under age 24 were not shelling out the bucks for Herbie merchandise. -Anderson said no decision has been made on Nebraska will name a replacement for Herbie this year.

MISSOURI TIGERS: At Columbia, this year it's black, gold and real green at the University of Missouri's Faurot Field. NOTES After 10 years, $1'million and numerous complaints, the artificial turf on the Tigers' playing field is nothing but a memory. And that's fine with players and coach Larry Smith. "Our players truly hated to come out here. The field was treacherous.

They didn't feel safe on don't think we played all out on it," Smith said. "The turf increases speed, but I'll sacrifice that speed for comfort. When you hit that (old) turf, you lost skin every time," defensive tackle Steve Martin said Thursday at Missouri's annual preseason photo day. The Tigers, whose first day of practice was today, play their season home opener against North Texas on Sept. 2.

The new surface, part of a $2.5 million stadium renovation, consists of customized Kentucky bluegrass atop 4 inches of sand reinforced with turf grids. Below is 8 inches of a sand-root zone mixed with organic matter above 4 inches of pea gravel. The base is a graded subsoil with a plastic drain line designed to siphon 8 inches of rain an hour. The field also has an in-ground watering system. "I've been amazed at the reaction of people," athletic director Joe Castiglione said.

"We've literally had people try to break in and get a look at the new field. "I know people have better things to do than watch grass grow. I'm not complaining. I love it. We just want them to come back Sept.

2 when the gates are open." NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS: At Lincoln, Nebraska completed its internal investigation Friday on leading rusher Lawrence Phillips' relationship with a sports agent, sending its report to the NCAA headquarters and Big Eight office, "I would expect that we will hear from them in a week to 10 days," said Al Papik, the school's senior associate athletic director in charge of compliance. Papik said the report was reviewed by NU Athletic Director Bill Byrne and head coach Tom Osborne before it was mailed. Papik declined to reveal the contents of the report until after the NCAA had a chance to review it. Since June, NU has been looking into Phillips' association with agent Steve Feldman of Newport Beach, and Feldman's recruiter, Jack Verner. A former recruiter for Feldman, Jesse Martinez of San Luis Obispo, said that Verner paid for a lunch at Lazlo's Brewery Grill in Lincoln for Phillips.

Phillips has acknowledged the lunch, but said he reimbursed Verner, Papik said. NCAA rules prohibit players from receiving free meals. Papik said NU had hoped that any questions about Phillips' eligibility would have been cleared up by the time practice started in August. "We were disappointed that the investigation and report took as long as it especially because we're in the season," Papik said. Baylor, women's coach settle suit By The Associated Press DALLAS Baylor University and former women's basketball coach Pam Bowers have settled her $4 million sexual discrimination lawsuit against the school, both sides announced Friday.

The case was scheduled to go to trial in September. "We are very pleased to be able to report that the litigation involving Baylor University and Pam Bowers has been settled," Baylor president Robert B. Sloan Jr. said in a press release. "We not only are delighted to put this matter behind us, but we also wish Pam Bowers the very best in her future endeavors." Baylor's attorneys said in the release that they had resolved the lawsuit, but refused comment on the specifics of the settlement.

"I can confirm that the litigation involving Baylor University and Pam Bowers has been fully compromised and settled," attorney Roy L. Barnett said. "Beyond this confirmation, neither I nor my client will speak to the particulars of the settlement." Bowers' attorney, Lanelle McNamara, also said she couldn't confirm any specifics about the settlement. She confirmed that Bowers, who had asked to be reinstated as a coach in the suit, will not return to the school. McNamara said her client is relieved to put the dispute behind her.

"This has been a very emotional experience for Pam Bowers and she has had a very difficult time dealing with the loss of her team," McNamara said from her Waco office. She added that Bowers probably won't pursue another coaching position in the near future. Martin continues to dominate field at Watkins Glen Auto racing notes He leads qualifying for Bud at the Glen By The Associated Press WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. No matter how fast everyone else runs, Mark Martin still manages to stay in front at Watkins Glen International. two-time defending champion put his Ford on the pole for the third straight year Friday in first-day qualifying for Sunday's Budweiser at the one of two road races on NASCAR's Winston Cup stock car circuit.

On a repaved 2.45-mile track, Martin shattered his 1993 qualifying lap record by 1.293 seconds with a once-around speed of 120.411 mph, but a dozen others led by Bill Elliott also beat the old mark. "They keep getting closer every year. They're sure on our heels this year," Martin said. "I used every inch of the race track, every single corner. If I had tried any harder, I'd have gone through a guardrail." Martin won from the pole here in 1993 and 1994 and has not finished out of the top five since 1988.

He lies fourth in the points standings, and his season usually gets hot in August. Elliott, who has placed in the top 5 in the last three races, came closest to Martin with a lap of 120.332. "Mark gets around here awfully well," Elliott said. "He's pumped up." The next two positions in Sunday's lineup were nailed down by Terry Labonte, who won the pole here but not the race in 1987 and 1991, and Rusty Wallace, who won the. race in 1987 and 1989 but never grabbed a pole.

Jeff Gordon, the precocious 24- year-old who leads the season standings, was next in fifth. "I wanted to be conservative," he said. "I didn't want to run off the track or do anything crazy." Coming into this weekend the 20th of 31 races Gordon holds an 82-point lead over Sterling Marlin, who failed to lock in a qualifying spot with the 15th slowest time in the 43-car field, and 121 points over Dale Earnhardt, who qualified in This Fall 15th place. In 1993, Martin topped Wally Dallenbach here, then rattled off victories in the next three races, finishing the year in third spot. The next year, he held off Ernie Irvan and rounded out the season with a win in Atlanta and second place overall behind Earnhardt.

Ricky Rudd, the only other two- time Glen winner, qualified in seventh behind Michael Waltrip, with Kyle Petty, Jeremy Mayfield and Morgan Shepherd rounding out the top 10. Only the top 20 qualifiers on Friday locked up starting positions for Sunday's race, with the rest of the 40-car field to be determined Saturday in the second round of time trials. Marlin said he "missed a corner" but expected to make amends Saturday. If Martin should win on Sunday, he would be the first racer to win three straight years from the pole since Darrell Waltrip dominated North Wilkesboro Speedway in 198183.
