Keith Atherton (1-1) worked 1 innings for the victory. Jeff Rear-don pitched the ninth for his sixth save. IRCC's Meacham signs with Tigers FORT PIERCE Indian River Community College right-hander Rusty Meacham signed a five-figure contract with the Detroit Tigers and has been assigned to Fay-etteville (N.C.) in the Class A South in the fifth inning, when Jacas reached first on an error by Yankee shortstop Carlos Rodriguez, moved to second on a single by Villanueva, took third on a fielder's choice, and scored on Toale's sacrifice fly. Polka finished the Mets' scoring by hitting a solo home run over the left-field wall in the bottom of the sixth inning, his third homer of the year. Fort Lauderdale scored its only run in the eighth.

Mitchell, the only Yankee to get two hits, led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch, went to third on David Tur-geon's groundout and scored on Bob Erickson's sacrifice fly. "I wasn't getting really tired (in the late innings), but I was getting mentally tired," said Rauth. St. Lucie 4, Fort. Laud.

1 FORT LAUDERDALE Rauth's 5-hitter leads St. Lucie to 4-1 win over Fort Lauderdale Oakland's Mark McGwire (right) sixth inning. The Athletics lost 8 and Kelly Gruber homered and Dave Stieb won his third consecutive start as Toronto beat Seattle. Mulliniks hit a two-run homer and RBI single and scored three times. Gruber had a solo homer and a run-scoring single among Toronto's 12 hits.

Stieb (4-3) gave up six hits and struck out six in eight innings. He gave up a three-run homer to Ken Phelps in the eighth inning. Mike Moore (2-4) was the loser. Yankees 12, White Sox 2 NEW YORK Unbeaten Richard Dotson pitched a four-hitter in his first game against his former team, and Jack Clark and Willie Randolph homered as New York beat Chicago. Dotson (5-0), who won 94 games in eight seasons with the White Sox, lost his shutout bid with two out in the eighth when Fred Manrique doubled and Daryl Boston hit his second home run of the season.

For 7 innings, Chicago's only get the shutout, but I didn't get that, either. The objective, however, was to get the win." St. Lucie scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning, loading the bases off Yankee starter Rodney Imes (5-2). Andre Jacas beat out a bunt, Juan Villanueva singled, and one out later John Toale walked to load the bases. Jacas was thrown out trying to steal home, but Hector Perez singled in Villanueva to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.

St. Lucie added a run in the second when Brandon Bailey drew a one-out moved to third on Manny Mantrana's single, and scored on Jacas' single to left field. But Matrana was thrown out at third on Jacas' single to end the inning. "We made a couple of baserun-ning errors tonight," said Hurdle, "but it's nothing to get excited about. The key tonight was that Rauth kept away from that big inning.

He was constantly ahead of the batters and he pitched aggressively." "He was around the plate all night," said St. Lucie catcher Fritz Polka. "He had good control and good velocity. It was one of the most well-pitched games I've caught." The Mets added an insurance run Atlantic League, IRCC coach Mike Easom announced. Meacham, a 6-foot-l, 152-pound-er who also pitched for the 1986 Jensen Beach team that won the American League World Series, was 11-5 with a 1.47 ERA for the Pioneers this season, including an 8-0 victory over state champion Hillsborough in the opening game of the state tournament Saturday at Winter Haven.

He gave up only 93 hits in 134 innings and led the state in ERA and strikeouts (118). IP: Innings pitched. BY DUANE MARSTELLER Palm Beach Post Staff Writer PORT ST. LUCIE A winning combination for a baseball team is good pitching, strong defense, and timely hitting. Wednesday night, the St. Lucie Mets did all three to perfection.

Chris Rauth pitched a five-hitter, the Mets defense committed no errors, and St. Lucie used timely hitting to defeat the Fort Lauderdale Yankees 4-1 and snap a four-game home losing streak in front of 492 at the St. Lucie County Sports Complex. "It was an outstanding game by Chris Rauth," said St. Lucie manager Clint Hurdle, whose team improved to 16-17.

"We made a couple of above-average catches in the outfield, and it set the tone for the evening." Rauth, a 24-year-old righthander, had a perfect game until Mark Mitchell led off the sixth with a single. Rauth (3-3) went on to complete his first game of the season. He struck out four and walked one. "As the game went on, it (the perfect game) didn't cross my mind," said Rauth, who used a variety of fastballs sliders and curves against the Yankees (19-15).
