The Post, Saturday, October 15, 1983-D7 Split Grassland at Calder Today Lou Ragusa Horse Racing Page- Fights Kellar In Miami Tonight From Pest Wirt services In wide-open events, 26 fillies and mares are entered in today's running of the split division Grassland Handicap on the turf at Calder, with a gross value of added. A top weight of 115 pounds was assigned to Pat's Joy in the first division seventh race by racing secretary, Terry Meyoeks, and 118 to Deby's Willing in the ninth race. With 13 horses going a mile and an eighth in each of the races, the top-weight choices have to contend with some solid runners today. Pat's Joy, ridden by Kelly Castaneda, lost by a nose to New York-bred Wise Willing on Sept. 30, and was second to Bad Dancin Kita the week before.

Both those fillies are entered today, but the turf gives the edge to Pat's Joy with a 5-1-3 record in 14 grass attempts. Bad Dancin Kita, winlcss in three turf races, goes to the front early but tired in her three grass tries. If upsets are the order of the day, then No Matter, with Dale Lynch in the irons, could take it all in the first division, with You Snapped stealing second. You Snapped is on a winning streak of three in a row, the last in her only grass attempt on Sept. 16.

Ridden by Jose Velez, the Lord Gay lord filly is six-for-seven in the money this year, with three victories. still active) and Luis and Primitive who have retired. Primitivo, the oldest, was the first to become a jockey and set the example tor the other.broih-ers. Primitivo, 43, owns a taxi-cab company in Bogota. With Kelly and Jose riding at Calder, another brother, Luis, became an agent for Kelly and may soon take on Jose.

"The last four years I trained a stable in California," Luis said, "but it is tough out there unless you have a big outfit behind you. So when I got this call from Kelly to come to Miami and be his agent, I jumped at the chance. "Kelly is a good rider and can hold his own with the best of them, but he has to take it seriously. I told him the only way I would handle his book was if he knuckled down. He has.

His riding proves it." Kelly, who changed his name from Hernando, is 26 and among the top 10 jockeys at the current meeting. Jose, 22, tried riding in California, but found it too difficult getting decent mounts as an apprentice. After spending some time at Keystone, he joined Kelly at Calder earlier this year. And there's still one more Castaneda Maria. The 20-year-old is a clerk in the Parimutuel Wagering Office at the track.

Greg Page, who has been chasing World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Larry Holmes for a title tight, fights Rick Kellar at Miami's Knight Convention Center tonight Instead. After defeating Renaldo Snipes on May 20, Page thought he had a fight with Holmes ar 0 Ridden by Gene St. Leon, Deby's Willing won this event last year in style, drawing away to win by three lengths. Since then, the 6-year-old Will Hays mare has been lightly raced. In four outings this year, she has one win beating Genuine Diamond by a nose on Sept.

19. Kelly Castaneda, riding Pat's Joy in today's Grassland Handicap, comes from a family of five jockeys. Born in Bogota, Colombia, Kelly was brought to this country in 1971 by his brother Marcos, who is also one of this country's top riders. Beside Kelly and Marcos, there's Jose (who's ranged, but the Holmes fight, as these things often do, ir-U through. Although Page, with a 22-1 record is the top-ranked WBC contender, Holmes will fight Marvls Fraiier, who is not In the Top 10 in either the WBC or the World Boxing Association, Nov.

25. It is almost certain that Page must stop Kellar, who has a 16 4 I record, to get any chance to fight Holmes early In 1984. "Up to now, it doesn't seem that being a contender matters. I'm the top-ranked contender, but I don't know If I'm going to get a shot at Holmes," Page said. Page'sonly loss wason June 11, 1982, to Trevor Berb' In Las Vegas.

Kellar's latest loss was to the economy he an unemployed maintenance mechanic from Council Bluffs, Iowa. The suspension will begin at tho opening of the season. Rollins will miss games against New Jersey Oct. 28 and Detroit Oct.

29. O'Brien upheld the Hi-mile Woodward and a second-place finish behind Highland Blade in the lV4-mile Marlboro Cup Handicap Sept 24. Play Fellow, ridden by Pat Day, won the Arlington Classic, American Derby and Travers, consecutively, before finishing second by 10 lengths to Kentucky Derby winner Sunny's Halo in the the 1 V-mile Super Derby Sept. 17 at Louisiana Downs. John Henry will try to become the first racehorse to win $4 million in a career when he runs in the m-mile, Jockey Club Gold Cup, a race he won in 1981 when he was Horse of the Year. Devil's Bag is unbeaten in three starts, including the Cowdin, and has been called "the best 2-year-old I've ever had," by Stephens, who has won over 200 stakes in his training career.

The colt will race against 11 juveniles in the one-mile, worth $570,000, with $342,000 to the winner and $125,400 to the runner-up. He goes into the race with earnings of $3,906,297, most of it for owner Sam Rubin, who bought the gelding for $25,000 when he was a 3-year-old in 1978. The Gold Cup will be John Henry's third start this year. He was injured after finishing 13th in the Japan Cup Nov. 28 and didn't race until he won the American Handicap at Hollywood Park July 4.

He finished second by a neck to Tolomeo in the Arlington Million at Arlington Park Aug. 28. His record is 32 wins, 13 seconds and eight thirds in 71 starts. John Henry is the early 5-2 favorite, with the entry of Slew O' Gold and Sir Mala Mala second at 7-2 and Play Fellow next at 4-1. Slew O' Gold, ridden by Angel Cor-dero comes in after a victory in The geldings Kelso and Forego, former Horses of the Year, will parade through the homestretch.

Kelso, 26, won the Jockey Club Gold Cup from 1960-64 when it was raced at 2 miles. Forego, 12, won the Jockey Club Gold Cup at 2 miles in 1974 and was Horse of the Year from 1974-76. He retired after two starts in 1978 with a record of 34 victories, nine seconds and seven thirds in 57 races and winnings of $1,938,967. John Henry, with jockey Chris McCarron, can reach the $4 million mark by finishing first or second in the Gold Cup, which, if 11 start, will be Rollins' $5,000 fine.

The suspension and fine were the result of an incident which occurred during an Atlanta Boston playoff game April 24 involving Rollins and Danny Ainge. In a statement, O'Brien said Rollins bore "substantial responsibility" for the incident. Although the characterization of your actions might be dated. It is plain that you did throw an elbow at Ainge, you did turn to confront him and you did bite his finger Seattle SuperSonics' owner Sam Schulman, 73, sold the Sonics for $21 million. Tho Sonics' new owner is Barry Ackerley, 49, a Seattle advertising tycoon who heads Ackerley Communications a Seattle-based firm which owns 11,000 billboards throghout the nation.

But earlier this week, when he just happened to stop by the White House, Lasorda improved on that theory as he performed in the press room. He said that as a major league manager, "You have to win or you're gone." As anexample, Lasorda recalled an incident two years ago when he took the Dodgers to Cincinnati to play the Reds. On the morning of the game, he went to church.

John McNamara, then manager of the Reds, slid into the pew next to him. Lasorda described what happened next: "Now I look at him, I know why he's there in church. He knows why I'm there. When the Mass is over, as we are leaving through the center aisle, as we approach the front door, John McNamara says to me, "Wait for me outside, I'll be right I said OK, but I thought that was a little strange. I said, 'Why would he say And I stopped and I watched him and he went over to the right side of the church and he knelt down and he lit a candle.

I saw that and I walked to the left side and up to the front of the altar and when he left I went down the right side and blew the candle out. You do anything you can to win. And all during the game, I kept hollering to McNamara, I said, 'Hey John, it ain't going to work.
