Kingwood never stopped on the play and beat Hunter's throw to second for a double. After Bob Natal walked, designated hitter Norm Santiago hit a single to shallow left field. Again tiago with one out. Dull's RBI gave him 22 for the season, tying John Vander Wal for the team lead. The Astros added another run In the fifth when Manny Acata scored on a throwing error by Expos catcher Bob Natal.

Natal tried a quick throw back to third to keep Acata close to the bag, but the throw went over third baseman Boi Rodriguez' head and into left field. Former John I. Athletics 11, Yankees 3 Baseball City Royals top Mets By TODD LaVOGUE Palm Beach Post Staff Writer WEST PALM BEACH Osceola Astros starting pitcher Guy Nor-mand held West Palm Beach Expos center fielder Tyrone Kingwood to only one hit in his first four at-bats.

But when Kingwood came to the plate with two outs and a runner on second in the bottom of the ninth inning, Astros manager Keith Bo-die went with the odds by bringing in right-hander John Sheehan to face the right-handed Kingwood. Kingwood obviously doesn't follow the percentages. He lined Shee-han's second pitch into left field, scoring Bobby Gaylor from second to give the Expos a 3-2 victory Friday night at Municipal Stadium in a Florida State League baseball game. "He definitely can stir up some action for us," West Palm Beach manager Felipe Alou said. "He is a great athlete.

He can run, throw and hit. When he has his head in the game he can be a great player." West Palm Beach and Osceola both have 25-17 records, but the Expos are in second place in the Eastern Division behind Vero Beach. The Astros are atop the Central Division. Gaylor singled and stole second to start the ninth inning. After Omer Munoz popped out and Quinn Mack flied out, Kingwood hit the game-winning single.

It was Kingwood's aggressive base running that tied the score 2-2. O'Brien longs to be All-Star ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -Flaying in an All-Star Game might have to remain a dream for Pete O'Brien. This would seem to be a good year for the Texas Rangers' first baseman to make the American League All-Star team. Minnesota's Kent Hrbek has said he won't plav if selected, and Baltimore's troubles have put five-time All-Star Eddie Murray in the doldrums. But while O'Brien was the Rangers' saving grace in April, his statistics have fallen off in May. Meanwhile, the cast of outstanding first basemen in the AL have started rolling up numbers.

O'Brien goes into a six-game ho-mestand against Minnesota and Toronto hitting .309, but six other first basemen have passed him statistically. "It would be nice to do, but it's something that really I don't have much control over," O'Brien said. "I've kind of resigned myself that I could never be voted into an All-Star Game. For me to get into an All-Star Game, I have to go above and beyond what is considered good. "I need to get right again and put up a nice month and a half, five weeks, like I was playing at the beginning of the year." Game Winning RBI Guenero (si).

Those he doesn't, he will hold soon. Yet here is one of the most unpretentious athletes in sports. "It all starts with Gretz," Lowe said.

"For him, it's not, 'I'm the No. 1 point scorer of all It's, 'I'm your Though Gretzky sets the pace, Messier sets the tone. When the team experiences a rare slump, Sather sometimes turns the team over to the fiery center. It seems that the intense Messier is not only one of the most feared players in the league, but also in his own dressing room. "All they have to do is look in Mark's eyes to know he means business," Sather said.

"Messier says it's not that the Edmonton Oilers are trying to win their fourth Stanley Cup, it's the guys in this dressing room trying to win this Cup. The guys in this room The Associated Press EDMONTON, Alberta Nice guys finish first. Three times in the last four years. The Edmonton Oilers have disproved the theory that championship-caliber players have to be individualistic and mean-spirited. The Oilers have made the Stanley Cup final in five of the last six years and are driving for their fourth championship.

Edmonton was built around Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Kevin Lowe, who have been with the club since it entered the NHL from the World Hockey Association in 1979. Lowe said that Oilers coach and General Manager Glen Sather built the club not only to win but to have fun doing it. "Slats knows what he's doing. He not only scouts talent, he scouts attitude. The Oilers have done a good job bringing in good guys, might not ever do it again," Lowe said.

"Gretz and Mess rarely have bad practices and that rubs off. There's a desire to want to win every game." Young players like Craig Simpson and Steve Smith have been incorporated into the system. "We've changed an awful lot. It's all business now," Gretzky said. "OK, it's still fun when we're winning.

That will never be taken out of the Oilers." Gretzky, in fact, believes that with the changes, his team is "playing a little bit better than we've ever played." "Some of the individual personalities change, but we've tried to maintain the philosophy," Lowe said. "This club was built around the idea that no one's bigger than the team.
