DAILY JOURNAL AND REPUBLICAN: FREEPOBT, APBIL 21, 1884. A WRECKED POOL Prospect That the Whisky Pool Is a Thing of the Fast. Investigating Cincinnati Election Lively llnle and the CONDENSED NEWS, sot- CINCINNATI, April The whisky pool is, apparently, smashed and the bottom kuocke.l out. On 'change Saturday the whisky men gathered in great numbers, and all of them were much excited. It was not until nearly 30 o'clock that the first sale was reported, and that was at $1.05, a drop of 7 cents.

Stevens, Dair Co. soil over ninety barrels at this figure, and Nelson, Perrin Co. sold another large lot. It was the opinion of nearly every one that now that the dropped it will not stop until it has fallen very low. Some dealers were of the opinion that whisky would drop below fl, In which case, tho consequences will be most disastrous.

"It means," said a prominent distiller, "that whisky is following the example sot by wheat and the stock market. Tuo price never would have remained flrm as long as it has but for the cast-iron au4 copper- fastened pool. There is nothing to prevent it from going down clear out of sight." When the. dealers who made the sales were asked concerning the matter, they said that was all that was offered, and so they took it, rather than have the whisky remain Prom the geu- oral look of things it seems as if everybody was anxious to put the blame on somebody else. The Union Distilling company comes out with a card, which was circulated on 1 cbange, offering to bet that at least two of the three houses comprising Maddox, Hobart S.

A. Walsh and the Mill Creek Distilling company, have sold, since Jan. 1, 1884, goods at a less figure than the Union Distilling company, alcohol being left out of the question, aqcess to be given the books of all the firms. Edwin Stevens, a prominent whisky man, was asked if he thought the pool was gone, and replied: "I can't say. May be, and may be not.

I think, however, that the whole thing can be patched up when the officers of the pool arrive at Miller is on his way here now, and he may possibly straighten out matters when he arrives. Stevens takes the most hopeful view of any of the situation. Most dealers expect and predict the very worst. As it looks th? matter will be either patched up or the pool go to smash utterly. Belligerence In Committee.

CINCINNATI, April committee appointed by the Ohio legislature to investigate the charges of election frauds and the conduct of the city government of Cincin- jiati for the past and present assembled and the investigation. Senator White was elected president and Representative Thomas secretary. There were also present Senator Brenner and Representatives Allen, O. Myers and Dr. Primrose.

Dr. Austin Wilson, director of the Lincoln club was examined. He did not know personally Of any election frauds in the Sixth ward at the April election; saw a man vote at another ward who was challenged. Robert Harlan testified that he saw two or three hundred illegal votes cast in the Sixth ward at the April election. There were 110 Republicans to- assist in preventing the frauds, and he could not take a list of names.

He named half a dozen who, be knew, were jiot voters in that ward; saw one squad vote that had just voted in another precinct. Myers asked the witness a few questions about his occupation and salary. Harlau became excited and said they were impertinent questions. He charged Myers with having shamefully abused him in a speech in the legislature, and added that nothing but the cover of his office as legislator protected him from his (Harlan's) vengeance. Myerd offered to take off the cover.

Both arose. Myers called Harlan a blackguard. Harlan replied: "You're a liar." Both rose, and a collision seemed imminent, but the chairman called for order and directed Col. Harlan to stand aside, and called Murat Ilal- Mr. Halstead testified that his personal knowledge of the conduct of the election was limited to the five minutes when he voted; saw no fraud; had information from Harlan about frauds in Sixth ward, and believed him a truthful man; was alsa informed by Col.

Whitfleld that evidence in legal form had -been obtained by th3 Lincoln Comptroller Eshelby and B. S. Cunningham were also examined, but nothing of interest developed. The Pocaltoutas ITIluc. POCAHO.VTAS, April bodj.es have been taken out of the of winch were identified, notwithstanding tbejr: decomposed condition.

It was supposed the latter body had been brought out some time ago, but his sisters knew some parts of his clothing. The body of Rush Davis was identified by his curly hair; Mike Johns, a Hungarian, by peculiarly made jacket. This makes 100 bodies taken out.

Some half dozen or more are supposed to b3 buried in the fan entry. These will not be recovered until the mine is cleared out, it and is thought there ara some who will never be found. All but three of the bodies have been buried near the scene of the explosion, in a burying ground selected and allotted as their last resting place by the owners of the mine. The managers the mine announce that they will resume operations in a few days. CarlUle to Speak ou tUe Turin; NEW.YORK, Aprljj Times Washington special says: It is understood thaF Speaker Carlisle proposes to deliver a set speech upon the floor of the house in behalf of Mr.

Morrison's tariff bill. The friend-, of the measura hope that Mr. Carlisle's advocacy will have a marked effect upon the deliberations of the house, and particularly upon the votes of members of his party, when the expected motion to strike out tho enacting clausa is made. It is said the speaker will'declaro his attitude to be in favor of a tariff for reven 10 solely, while ho will maintain that a tariff so lenient will be amply sufficient to afford incidentally whatever protection may needed by American labor and manufactures, and that a tariff laid for revenue will improve American wages and elevate the general condition of the laboring classes. Auibug thosa who know that Mr.

Carlisle intends to address the house on the tariff question, his speech is looked forward to with pleasure, because tho. ability and judicial fairness of his manner of treating questions of public interest is generally conceded even by those who do not slw. hU opinions.
