It worked for three or four laps, but the fight was too much and Foyt eventually slipped to 10th forcing him to wait at least another year to become the first four-time Indy winner. But, Foyt got some revenge. Three of his four starting cars finished in the top 10. Rookie Donnie Allison a shoo-in for "Rookie of the Year" steered a Foyt car to fourth.

Jim McElreath, who started last (33rd) guided Foyt 's car to fifth. Last year's "Rookie of the Year," Mark Donohue, took over second when Foyt vacated. Dan Gurney has been saying he would improve one spot this year after two straight seconds. Instead, he fell one spot to third. Neither Donohue nor Gurney challenged Unser.

Mario Andretti, 1969 winner, fell victim to three pit stops for a. faulty right rear universal joint and had to three times in 15 laps. He finished sixth. Unser had everything going his way. Foyt got messed up in the pits and in the lap 172 wreck.

Unser made pit stops of 29 seconds, 20 seconds and 24 seconds. While Foyt messed up his clutch in the McCluskey mess, Unser skidded a little in the oil, but recovered. Andretti kept changing right rear tires, Unser went 500 miles without new rubber. Finest charges were made by McElreath (33rd to 5th), Joe Leonard and Lloyd Ruby. Leonard, driving Al Unser's backup car, moved from 18th to second by the 75th lap, but his car quit.

Hard-luck king Ruby was really humming purring from 25th to 10th by 10 laps and was in third challenging the leaders on lap 50 when his engine spouted a smoke screen an chief steward Harlan Fen-gler ordered him black-flagged off the track. Once the race got under way, Johnny Rutherford bounded from the middle of the front row to take the lead at turn one. "Rutherford got going in a hurry, so, I decided not to challenge him for that first turn, so, I let him go," said Unser. "But I quickly discovered my car was working a lot better than his, so I took him down the back stretch on that first lap. When I felt how well my car was working, I decided there was no use backing off." Just like the month of May, it was Al Unser's day and nobody could upstage him.

Unser led 191 of the 200 laps. The only time his dark blue turbo-charged Ford didn't lead was when he was in the pits. As soon as he took the track after his three pit stops, he was back in the lead. The only trouble Unser encountered on a gray Indiana afternoon came on lap 172. Roger McCluskey banged the wall on turn three, caught fire and triggered a five-car melee.

"I was in turn two when the yellow came on," said Unser. "When I got into turn three, the car was on the fence and there was oil all across the track. I did get a little sideways, but never was I in trouble. "The second time around, we had to cut through the infield grass to avoid but that's the only problem I had all day," he said. For most any other driver, the victory would mean a $200,000 pay check.

Unser made out much better which is why he saw dollar signs on the checkered flag. By leading 191 laps, he added $28,000 in lap prize money. And, he cashed in $30,000 from his sponsor and will need two new stalls in his Albuquerque, N.M., garage for automobiles. "Henry Orenstein, president of Topper Toy Co. our sponsor, told me this morning that if I happened to win the race, there was $30,000 in it for me," said Unser.

"Plus I get the Oldsmobile 442 pace car and a new Lincoln Mark III fromVelMiletich." Jones and Miletich are co-owners of those like Jones drivers," Unser told Miletich. "Win the race and you've got one," said Miletich. Jones, who won the race in 1963, hand-picked Al Unser to drive for him. As a result, Unser perf ormed two unusual feats. Jones started on the pole when he won in 1963 and the pole winner hadn't won the Indy 500 since.

Unser started on the pole. And, Unser's older Brother, Bobby, won the race in 1968. Al's victory gave Indy its first brother combination in victory lane. Orenstein, whose Topper Co. makes minature Johnny Lightning race cars, huddled with Jones last year to select a driver.

"Tell me, Parnelli," said Orenstein, "if your life were on the block and depended upon a race driver to save you, who would you pick?" Jones never hesitated. "I'd put my life on Al Unser." PBFS has been closed for the last four weeks due to an ownership change. The D-K-L Associates, headed by Danny Taylor of radio WLIZ in Lake Worth, recently purchased rights to operate the speedway. Starting next week all racing will be held on Friday nights. Two beat races in each division along with the feature events highlights today's program. Today's purse is expected to top the 13,000 mark.
