Dennis is the star of a 16-page comic book released by the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect.

The comic book, called Coping With Family Stress, features Dennis in some of his usual nerve-wracking es-capades. Cartoonist Hank Ketchum has added commentaries and hints to parents and other adults on what to do when a child tries their patience. In one strip, Dennis resorts to breaking an ashtray after his parents and next-door neighbors ignore him. The moral is, "when children feel neglected, they may go to extremes to get attention." Another section suggests that parents go easy on trying to instill table manners. "Probably more meals are ruined at the table than on the stove.

Our nagging is as impolite as their sloppy eating," the author said. The center, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, will distribute 550,000 copies of the book to parents and children through day care centers and Head Start programs.
