CAP) Republican governors, demanding a party role to match their bolstered numbers, went to work today to build an organization that could propel one of them into the GOP presidential nomination. Their potential leaders were not saying which one although Michigan's Gov. George Romney clearly is the front runner among them, as he is in the public opinion polls. Colorado Gov.

John A. Love and Rhode' Island's John H. Chafee, both seeking the chairmanship of the Republican Governors' Assocation, agreed that the 25 GOP state executives should seek to line up behind a single candidate for the White House. With broad, if not unanimous agreement, Chafee told a joint news conference Thursday night, the governors can control' the selection of the party's 1968 candidate. He said the governors also should work to make sure that the next Republican platform embraces imaginative proposals for "new solutions to the many old problems." Chafee said the governors should take an active, role in the selection of their state delegations to the next national convention.

And he said they should decide "early in the game" who they want nominated. "I have no first choice now," he said. Love said he believes the next nominee will be a governor. "We have an outstanding slate of governors," he said. (AP) William A. Dearth, 55-year-old Parsons insurance man, was nominated last night to fill a vacancy in the Kansas Senate. Democratic committees from Labette, Neosho and Wilson counties comprising the 2nd Senatorial District voted unanimously to recommend Dearth to Gov. William H. A very for appointment to the seat formerly held by Wade M.

Ferguson of Parsons. Ferguson resigned recently because of poor health. Dearth told the committee members after his nomination that he will be a candidate for election to the Senate in 1968. He will fill the remaining two years of Ferguson's unexpired term. No other candidate was presented to the three committees for consideration.

Dearth has served three terms as Labette County clerk and two terms as a Parsons city commissioner. He also served as mayor of Parsons during his terms as commissioner under the manager plan of government. The senator designate presently is serving as chairman of the Parsons Urban Renewal Agency.
