They will reside at the county seat. All this talk about the fruit having been killed by- the cold weather in February seems to be premature. J. W. Stanton of Richview, who is secretary of the Southern Illinois Horticultural Association and an expert in fruit culture, says that with the exception of peaches he has never before known, at this time of year, a better prospect for fruit pf all kinds.

The travel study of "London, or Modern Babylon," given at the Presbyterian church Thursday e.vening, was excellent. Those who were so fortunate as to enjoy it are anticipating much pleasure in the continued study of England, Scotland and Ireland given next Thursday evening. This is an exceptional opportunity for aeeing these countries at a very small expense. Cruse, Elliott denied ever giving such a note. He was placed under bond until the next term of court. We learn that a mercantile agency is soon -to be started in Carbondale. It will be -on the same plan as Bradstreet or Dunn's, with the exception of being a purely local affair, embracing only the city of Carbondale and Carbondale Township. It is for the protection of merchants aud busi- ness men.

The agency will issue a book, called the blue book, where every man or woman old enough to transact his or her own business will be rated according to their reliability. There will be a key to the book so that none but a member of the.age'ncy can tell just how a person is rated, and each member, will receive a revised list each month. It will be a good thing for our merchants, as they can tell at a glance as to whether a man is responsible or not. It is rumored that a move is on foot to secure an agreement among the merchants of our city to close their doors to business at 8 o'clock every evening. Such a move would evidently be a great boon to all who operate or are employed in mercantile establishments.

Fifteen hours continuous labor is too much for any one to stand up, and many of our stores have their doors open even longer' than that. We believe that a universal agreement of this kind would not only be beneficial to all who are engaged in merchandising, but would result in no injury whatever fcj trade. court held a session in Monday.
